The article published to suggest that Jefferson had fathered a child out of wedlock was published just in time to provide cover for Clinton. The British "scientific" journal which published the article withdrew their support when it was pointed out that the analysis had not precluded the paternity of Jefferson's brother, which was the then current speculation. The story got feet [actually wings] since it smeared a founding father at a time in Clinton's Presidency when character was being swept under the rug.

I subscribed to U.S. News and World report at the time. When the issue came to my door with Jefferson's picture on the front cover with the baseless accusations, I called and canceled my subscription.

In David Barton's book, "Original Intent: The Court, the Constitution and Religion," (www.wallbuilders.com), there is a section on Thomas Jefferson and the allegations of his fathering a child by Sally Hemmings (who was fathered by Thomas Jefferson's father-in-law). According to the book, there had been an Englishman who made up such horrible lies about people in England that he was banished to America. Once in America, the first person this man attacked was Thomas Jefferson. Because the allegations were false, Thomas Jefferson NEVER responded to them.

That is Mitochondrial Group K, and is a female lineage.

What you want is much further down the page, at M-70, Y-Chromosome Haplogroup K-2. That map does generally jibe with the article.

The list is NOT numerical, either; M-70 is way further down than some of the M-200 series. Go figure.

When Jefferson was in Paris, he hired someone to trace his English ancestry. Even back then, there were folks peddling fake genealogies, so the Welch connection is somewhat tenuous. The Jefferson male line actually goes back to the little village of Pettistree, in Suffolk. Its not far from the city of Colchester, the oldest Roman city in Britain. One explanation for the Lebanon (Phoenician) halotype might be a Roman connection, Roman soldiers behaving much like American soldiers of World War II in England: Oversexed, Overpaid, and Over Here.

My bet is on the Phoenicians -- they got to the British Isles and beyond.

Quite amazing really considering how large is the ocean and how small were their ships.

Not exactly baseless, though certainly unproven. Jefferson or a male relative of his certainly did father at least one of Sally Hemmings's children.

Jefferson's wife, Martha, died young and, per some accounts, had Jefferson swear that he would never marry again. Sally Hemmings was most likely Martha's half-sister. If there was a physical resemblance between the two, it would not be surprising if Jefferson had a relationship with Hemmings.

In any case, Clinton supporters hardly needed Jefferson. Grover Cleveland was elected President twice (and won the popular vote three times) despite acknowledging he had fathered a child out of wedlock. (Ironically, he may not have been the actual father, as the mother in question, got around, so to speak. However, he was the one of her lovers who took responsibility for providing child support.)
