He could have said: Well, when I took office, there were so many criminals running around with illegal firearms, NY was overwhelmed. I did what I thought was best, with advice from my police dept.

Better yet, he could have gone after the criminals, rather than criminalizing law abiding citizens.

Yes, but he screwed the pooch and went after law abiding gun owners too. I was suggesting a smarter way to answer the inevitable question, and he obviously did not think it through well. Either way, I wasn't gonna support him.
