Rudy on gun control: "You've got to REGULATE consistent with the Second Amendment"
FOX News ^ | Feb 6, 2007 | Hanity and Colmes

Posted on 02/07/2007 2:40:44 PM PST by Jim Robinson

HANNITY: Let me move on. And the issue of guns has come up a lot. When people talk about Mayor Giuliani, New York City had some of the toughest gun laws in the entire country. Do you support the right of people to carry handguns?

GIULIANI: I understand the Second Amendment. I support it. People have the right to bear arms. When I was mayor of New York, I took over at a very, very difficult time. We were averaging about 2,000 murders a year, 10,000...

HANNITY: You inherited those laws, the gun laws in New York?

GIULIANI: Yes, and I used them. I used them to help bring down homicide. We reduced homicide, I think, by 65-70 percent. And some of it was by taking guns out of the streets of New York City.

So if you're talking about a city like New York, a densely populated area like New York, I think it's appropriate. You might have different laws other places, and maybe a lot of this gets resolved based on different states, different communities making decisions. After all, we do have a federal system of government in which you have the ability to accomplish that.

HANNITY: So you would support the state's rights to choose on specific gun laws?

GIULIANI: Yes, I mean, a place like New York that is densely populated, or maybe a place that is experiencing a serious crime problem, like a few cities are now, kind of coming back, thank goodness not New York, but some other cities, maybe you have one solution there and in another place, more rural, more suburban, other issues, you have a different set of rules.

HANNITY: But generally speaking, do you think it's acceptable if citizens have the right to carry a handgun?

GIULIANI: It's not only -- I mean, it's part of the Constitution. People have the right to bear arms. Then the restrictions of it have to be reasonable and sensible. You can't just remove that right. You've got to regulate, consistent with the Second Amendment.

HANNITY: How do you feel about the Brady bill and assault ban?

GIULIANI: I was in favor of that as part of the crime bill. I was in favor of it because I thought that it was necessary both to get the crime bill passed and also necessary with the 2,000 murders or so that we were looking at, 1,800, 1,900, to 2,000 murders, that I could use that in a tactical way to reduce crime. And I did.

From your profile page:

Hate RINOs, moderates, centrists, etc. Support only conservative Republicans and have no problem voting for the LP or CP candidate if the GOP is a RINO.

Interesting, given your support for a Giuliani presidency.

Anyone running for POTUS needs to be a leader: someone who knows their own principles, knows their own goals, and knows how to get other people to follow pursuant to those principles and goals.

Anyone who is open to being "educated on an issue" is not suitable for President Of The United States Of America. The office of POTUS is not a place for uncertainty. Decisiveness and leadership are crucial; cluelessness and ignorance should not wield The Veto Pen and The Button.

While Rudy needs to be "educated on this issue", I trust that his principles and goals on the issue are already decided. I neither expect him to change (he is a proven leader, confident in his principles and goals), nor want him to change (racing toward the primaries is a lousy time to start figuring out how to address RKBA nationally).

What we need is a leader who shares the base's principles and goals - not someone unsure of where to go.

My personal favorite is the spin on "single issue voters".

As if there was one single issue where Rudy had a variance with conservatives. That's the entire problem. There's a whole host of "single issues".

Those right of NYC's political center may be unaware that they're left of the national political center.

"In my opinion, if we get a weak conservative (as, in my opinion, a Ford, a Dole, a GHW Bush) then we have a choice: give our full support, or allow the Democrat to win through inaction."

First off, even Ford, Dole, and GHW Bush didn't hold left wing positions on Guns, Queer rights, and Butchering babies just before their first breath. Perhaps not as conservative as we liked, but nothing close to those extreme views.

Second, If we are unwilling to accept the social liberal candidates now, we wont be offered more of the same next time. They wont bother trying to corrupt and split our party again. It will be obvious that its a fools errand to try.

I don't even want someone with those views to make it to the primaries. It sends a sick message about our party for anyone to think we could slip that far into evil.

Its rather sad that the Republican grassroots that has fought for years to keep anyone with those views from taking office, are now forced to spend their time keeping out someone that claims to belong in the party.

I draw the line at much less that Rudy's sick views!

We'd better try to educate him, because we may end up with a choice between him and Hillary.

I find a 9 mm sufficient for my self defense needs.

Good. Glad you do.

I choose a silenced short-barreled high-capacity .223 as sufficient for mine. Would you restrict me from doing so? NY does. (Fortunately GA doesn't.)

I also [would] choose a M119A1 howitzer as my extra contribution to "the security of a free state". Would you restrict me from doing so? By what right or power would you, or does anyone else, stop me?

Admirably succinct and apt. I would say they're "far left". But you nailed it.

plenty on FR have chimed in, trust me. And i do appreciate your articulate and thoughtful response. I am listening and taking it all in. You speak of laws we already have restricting ownership to felons, etc. but in the ultimate FR world, there would be no waiting periods, no laws whatsoever for ANYONE, criminal past or not, on gun ownership. So that doesn't fly in the face of all of you who think the current gun laws are too restrictive. Of course there should be laws.

so far, you win the prize for articulating the position the most clearly, with valid points, and a perspective i did not think of. a couple others are in 2nd place, and i welcome the dialogue.

by the way, i am a Christian (Republican) homeschool single Momma of four (that I adopted). FYI....

Man-o-man, I'd hate to be at the recieving end of that.

If I were many years younger, as strong as an Ox, and being chased through the rain forest by King Kong, I'd like to have one of these little pea shooters handy. I can only salivate over it now.

YOU get real. Kids are, as has been pointed out to you, the responsibility of their PARENTS, not the State. As for your psychotics, if they are well enough to not be institutionalized, THEIR RIGHT TO SELF-DEFENSE MAY NOT BE ABRIDGED. And, judging from your posts, YOU might be one of your own psychotics. Would you say that YOU should be disarmed?

:-)

I enjoy this banter precisely because, when done in honest earnest, it helps both sides understand the issue and refine arguments.
