That 'thing' actually permits a ship to move faster and more smoothly through the water.

It's also probably jammed with sonar gear.

The generic name for it is a bulbous bow. It's purpose is to modify the flow of water along the hull and reduce drag. Less drag means more speed, longer range, better fuel efficiency.

And no, it's not crammed with sonar. Since the ship has nothing to fire at the sub to begin with it doesn't need sonar

I just received the eMail with the USS San Antonio picture that's been going around. Of course, I had to come HERE first to search on it.

Anybody know when the real deal USS New York will be ready for action?

The Navy Web site really didn't indicate a specific date other than "2007".
