USS New York
It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .
It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.
Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."
Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."
The ship's motto? "Never Forget"

It just seems to protrude a bit more than I'm used to seeing, and it looks a bit flaccid. Kinda gross, if you ask me. ;-)
Its not a boat that was designed to pick up chicks..........
To: r9etb
I was not suggesting there couldn't be alternative uses.

I suppose the helos could, but on LPDs flight ops are primarily for troop deployment. Although I've seen Apaches tied to the cloverleafs, when flight ops are in gear the deck was usually taken up by a Chinook (oh, how I was tempted to spell that correctly...).I would expect that if those type of helo ops were to be run the LHD(s) would handle it.
The Amphib group (LHDs, LSDs and LPDs) is supported by CGs, DDGs, FFGs and SSNs. So, as you said Frigates and Destroyers are certainly in the mix.
The Austin class LPDs look very sharp. I wonder what they changed - the Raleigh class could jam in ~1K of jarheads.

Interesting. It looks to have that new type of hull that makes the ship much more stable at high speed.
Dang it all...I wish I could remember the name.

If it were flaccid they'd have had to name the ship the "Jimmy Carter".

Thank you. I still think the service gave me more than I gave it.

Always thought it would be a great idea to take a Trident boat taken out of service due to SALTs, remove tubes, put in hot bunks for a USMC battalion with some more air generation, some messing areas. You could move them ashore with inflatable rubber boats. A battalion of US Marines arriving unexpectedly in your harbor is a defense planing nightmare.

They did that except with Seals and probably a few Marines too..

In light of the events in Congress this past week, the call for SURRENDER among the Democrat operatives who seized control of the legislative branch of the government, I thought it appropriate to "ping" you patriots.
All of you commented on this thread about the USS New York, still under construction.
Her motto: "NEVER FORGET", something the Democrats have done all too soon.
May we never forget, and do our best to remind our families, friends, neighbors and communities: the war on terror isn't over.
I hope all of you have a great weekend. God bless.

Her motto: "NEVER FORGET", something the Democrats have done all too soon. Yes they have and with the help of the media, too many Americans have too. I'm afraid that the wake up call we eventually get will be a very traumatic one that will shake, but not break, the very foundations of this great nation under God.

LOL! Too funny.
I just received the eMail with the USS San Antonio picture that's been going around. Of course, I had to come HERE first to search on it.
Anybody know when the real deal USS New York will be ready for action?
The Navy Web site really didn't indicate a specific date other than "2007".

FYI:
The USS New York will be commissioned in NYC in summer of 2009. This gala event will honor the men and women who serve on board and the victims of 911. It will also raise money for the crew and their families. For more information about the commissioning of the Uss New York including a schedule of events visit the official website at www.USSNY.org.

I’m very proud to work for the company that built this beauty —Northrop Grumman.
Yeah! In your face Islamofacists and those that thought they could deliver a knock-out blow....
