USS New York
It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .
It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.
Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."
Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."
The ship's motto? "Never Forget"
That image does indeed depict USS SAN ANTONIO LPD 17, but it still looks like a CGI, not a photograph. IMHO.
Thats the USS San Antonion, you posted the picture from an email hoax........
"What's that .... thing sticking out? Perhaps it's part of the offensive dildonics suite."
That sure is one honkin' anal probe, hugh?
One size fits all (towelheads).
:)

Sorry, the San Antonion is still under construction, that was the San Antonio
If you're a bad guy, you really don't want that to happen.
I see that. Still, I like the idea of using steel from the WTC in a new warship.
Well, yeah....
It just seems to protrude a bit more than I'm used to seeing, and it looks a bit flaccid. Kinda gross, if you ask me. ;-)
Almighty God, we ask you to bless this ship and all who sail on her, protect them and grant them succes as they defend us from our heathen enemies. In Jesus name we pray, Amen !
God speed USS New York.
Thanks for your service.
Perhaps the Helos on board carry Harpoons and/or Hellfires for perimeter surface defense.
The long probe you see cheats the laws of physics. It fools the water into thinking the ship is longer than it really is, thereby increasing the ship's hull speed, which is always a function of the length of the hull.
I expect that she and her sisters also travel in the company of a frigate or destroyer or two.
Set a course for REVENGE! BWA HA HA!
Now that's one Lady you don't want to tick off.
May Gods' Holy Angels protect you, and all those that you carry.
I guess, however, you missed the main, er, thrust of my comment....
But .. I believe it's the same style of ship.
The generic name for it is a bulbous bow. It's purpose is to modify the flow of water along the hull and reduce drag. Less drag means more speed, longer range, better fuel efficiency.
And no, it's not crammed with sonar. Since the ship has nothing to fire at the sub to begin with it doesn't need sonar
Is it balls out under flank speed?
