James Lileks: Don't Underestimate Giuliani (And Newt still can't win!)
The Newhouse News Service ^ | February 6, 2007 | James Lileks

Posted on 02/06/2007 6:08:59 PM PST by quidnunc

Rudy Giuliani is in. Suggested campaign slogan: "He dealt with Brooklyn. He can handle Baghdad.'' He's not a sure thing; he has enough baggage to fill the cargo hold of a cruise ship. His sundry personal-life issues bother social conservatives; the gun control stance dismays the Second Amendment wing of the party; the pro-choice opinions alarm the evangelicals. That leaves about 47 Republicans, right? After all, it's just a party of cousin-marrying yahoos who'd sooner shoot up Planned Parenthood than vote for one of those fish-on-Friday types. Right?

No. Voters are more flexible and forgiving than you might expect. And none of the objections obscure the central appeal of the Rudy candidacy: He'll nuke 'em if he has to. That won't be the central theme of his campaign, of course, but it's the unstated strength of his candidacy. He's not a wuss. Look at the rest of the field:

Mitt Romney. He's a heavy fave, but the M-word makes his support in the evangelical community unsure. Many will vote for him, since he's an all-around moral guy, and no one wants a public debate over doctrinal differences. Other evangelicals regard his faith as something between David Koresh and Scientology, and would rather vote for Joe Lieberman. (Him you could convert!) Romney has an abortion flip-flop to confront, which softens his support as well. He's a solid candidate thus far because he's, well, solid: He appears hewn from the Presidential Quarry.

On the other hand, he could be a genial cyborg from an invading race. Wouldn't exactly surprise anyone.

Apparently, that's Ann's litmus test, but never mind Hillary's positions.

Ann's argument makes no sense

No, here is Rudy's campaign slogan - and I'm not being facetious. "Whether in a suit or a dress, don't mess with Rudy!"

Oh deary me, golly gee whiz, for those of us who KNOW that such ROASTS are almost NEVER shown on T.V. and when they are, have been Bowdlerized, and also know that this was NEVER shown on T.V., all I can assume is that you are completely unenlightened about things that happen outside of your social strata and milieu.

Yes...and never mind that the POTUS has little power...except if he gets to pick a SCOTUS justice...but, that can be a "crap shoot" also...see, Reagan's picks.

It didn't bother me when she said she wouldn't vote for Rudy because of his stance on abortion...that is her right...but, then to say she WOULD vote for Hillary OVER Rudy....that is bizarre.

When she's on point, Ms. Coulter is deadly. Takes a lot of brass to speak on campus, for instance.

Still, on balance, I think she's a little too acidic, almost to the point of being a slight liability. We need to bring people to conservatism, instead of harping on them. God Bless Her, but I really think she'll quiet down a little, with this much at stake.

She made no sense at all. Ignoring Hillary's aims.

I can't believe she won't support him if he's the nominee, but maybe I'm wrong.

She added that Rudy must change his mind on abortion... like Hillary's is better and Hillary's other positions are better. Annie likes Mitt best.

I don't have a problem if she wants to support Mitt

But her arguement against Rudy is ... well ... pretty dang stupid

I agree with you.

I know that Hugh Hewitt is partial to Mitt Romney..but even he isn't endorsing anyone right now.

I am not going to base my decision on Hugh's...but I do feel that he will give the best chance to ALL of the candidates.

Of course he can't get McCain to come on his show....LOL

"...the former president's oleaginous charisma."

LOL!

What a very literate way to say "oily!"

Oops, wait a minute - is it OK to say "literate?"

Will that get me in trouble with the chip-on-shoulder crowd, the way it did the President when he called someone "articulate?"

(When he could have simply called him "oleaginous" and everyone would presumably been happy)

Did any of you see Sam Waterston on Chrissy Matthews show???

He has a group that is calling for a ONE TIME election for POTUS that has a split ticket of one Dem and one GOP.

Then, he says, after 2008...we can go back to the 2 party system....

Sam says the country is so consumed with partisanship...that the cure would be a bipartisan Administration!!!

Even Chrissy gave him a weird look....just kinda humored him.

I did see one video a few years ago. A line that comes to mind is, "The mort is frenchified" ("Gangs of New York").

Yes, Hugh will give all the candidates an opportunity to come on his show ... he will ask them good questions .. and let the listeners decided for themselves ..

and I would be surprised if McCain takes him up on the offer *L*

Well .. I'm off to la la land .. kids will be getting up earlier .. plus Mr. Mo1 is home on call this week

Sweet Dreams y'all
