You're splitting hairs. I've seen a lot of cars go through reds a lot later than that, in plenty of time for cross traffic to start. Besides, the intersections around here with the cameras are clearly marked with warnings that they are there. I'm all for everything possible to slow people down and make them go through intersections in a safer manner.

Tailgaters, careless cell phone talkers, lane darters, red-light cheaters, speeders, make up appliers, map readers, eaters - hell they all ought to be put in jail for a night. They are a threat to me and my family.

I have absolutely no problem with a uniformed policeman doing traffic stops. I have no problem with Officer Whoever setting up at an intersection with a camera and snapping a picture then at that point making a traffic stop to issue me a citation if I broke the law. But no I do not support having an unmanned camera snapping pictures and citations being issues on that basis. It is called the right to face ones accuser an actual eye witness.

For the record in my 34 years driving I have not once challenged a traffic ticket issued me by an officer {about 5 or so total} nor have I ever even tried to talk my way out of such. I mail in the fine and move on. Live Officers doing their job? Yes I support them issuing needed traffic tickets to dangerous drivers. Unmanned traffic cameras and no witness than a note in the mail? No person should be subject to such.

I don't have any empirical evidence to support this, but it seems logical, and seems like it would be more effective.

Instead of handing out more tickets, many of dubious accuracy, for red light running, why not have more enforcement of the type that is much more unimpeachable. At the same time, increase fines to the point that they are really painful. Painful to the point of real deterence. But expend the resources necessary to make sure that the tickets handed out are truly accurate.

Instead of fining 1,000 people $120 using techniques that snag a lot of innocent people, we should be using better methods, i.e. real people, and making the fines $500, or more. Make it hurt.

When a large portion of the public perceives traffic law enforcement's primary objective to be revenue gathering, safety is not being served.

ride the bus if you are that threatened.

If you are in a bus then you don't have to worry about other drivers. Why not pass a national speed limit of 20 mph? MANDATORY FULL FACE HELMETS FOR AUTOMOBILE DRIVERS?

This is about nusance for revenue plain and simple. They don't give a poop about you or your family. Redlight cameras are documented as causing more rear end crashes. In DC the cameras were caliberated with a fast yellow. Another was coded to always show a red at the time regardless of actual timing.

enjoy the bus.
