You seem to use 'social liberal' and 'socialist liberal' interchangably. As a fiscal conservative and a social liberal, I can tell you that I am no more socialist than you are.
Yes, you're correct about Reagan. I remember how the press HATED him, but his charismatic personality outshown them & the American people liked what they saw.
But I do think the media has gotten wiser about not letting a good conservative get their foot in the door with them. They are shutting Hunter out, in my opinion - don't even put his name on the polls.
Luckily, we have the internet now - a valuable tool we need to use. A good conservative can win, if good conservatives get behind him or her.
All fine and good, but as Jim points out, Republicans only rarely reflect those principles lately.
Are we all to become members of the Constitution Party? Shall we throw another "Perot Fit?"
If so, let's just give the White House key to whoever wins the DNC nomination.
Better still would be to keep jerks like McCain out and nominate someone worthwhile.
Thanks
It's true that we do get the government we deserve. I think that's why so many of us are kicking such a fuss this time - we don't want to see it happen again. Change has to start now.

Being against liberals is not enough of a platform to bring home many votes, or voters, either.
Too much of the Republican party built its identity around being "agin dem damn socialists", even after the Republicans had command of the entire government.
The last 5 years has almost been a farce on the order of an old PJ O'Rourke line: The Republicans campaign on the proposition that government doesn't work, then they get elected and PROVE it.
{{{{shudder}}}}
next question...
Then her time has come.
But there are a lot of stupid people in America. This large swath of voters just voted in Democrats because Republicans did a horrible job in conveying their message. They completely forgot the bread-and-butter economic & trade, and free market issues that used to be the mainstay of the party. I mean, supporting an online ban on gambling? Medicare D boondoggle? No Child Left Behind? How is this helping conservatism?
Republicans need to get back to this. Stop trying to be our Daddys by preaching this moral stuff that turns people off. I'm not saying they should ignore it, but there's no need to run on it 24/7. We know Republicans (for the most part) are pro-life, pro-gun, and pro-marriage.
Now Rudy/Romney are able to attract these voters without alienating social conservatives. They would be fools to run on a gun-control, gay marriage, pro-abortion, absolute fools. That's why I'm puzzled at the attacks on them. So don't vote for them then in the primaries.
Ive been saying and hearing the same thing-edwards will be their guy.
the whole hillary thing, to me, is simply to scare conservatives to vote for someone they would never dream of under the guise hes the only one who can defeat her.
what happens if everyone pulls the rudy switch and there is no hillary? then we have two dems running:(
i like duncan too:)
There are members right here on this conservative forum who are pro-Rudy!
Now, I'd vote him into office if need be, but only as an anti-Hillary desperation.
*Spit!*
Change indeed.
We need Reagan.
"As a fiscal conservative and a social liberal"
Wouldn't that be a Libertarian? I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that. Well, other than the fact they never win much of anything.
the party of Lincoln,
"Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves;and, under a just God,can not long retain it.",
the party of Reagan,
"Freedom prospers when religion is vibrant and the rule of law under God is acknowledged"
will cease to exist.
That sucks.
But what's in a name?
I'm a conservative, but it is NONE of my business what other people do behind closed doors, if they want to inject themselves with drugs, etc.
I don't need to look at any politician for moral support. Green Bay is a Catholic, close-knit community where people are always willing to lend you a hand (or a beer lol). Just cut the size of government, whatever happened to fighting for limited government?
As I recall, a lot of that stuff was allowed to go, kind of, like this most of last year...
"He wants Hillary to win! He wants to turn it over to the Dems! I can't believe he said that! I've known he was a BircherBuchananiteDUTrollDemInfiltratorMobyStormfronter all along! Are you kidding me! We're at war! He's supporting the terrorists!! He's unappeasable! What a malcontent!! He's never been a real conservative!!! He hates Bush!! He wouldn't say any of this if he wasn't a Bush basher!!! He hates Republicans too!!! What does he want, for everyone to vote third party!!?!! Shut up, Go away!!! We don't need your support anyway!! We don't need the votes of the so-called "conservatives" that you're talking about because they're just a bunch of moronic, right-wing, extremist, fringe whacko, malcontent, unappeasable, fake conservative, democrat loving, stupid hicks who want Hillary for President!!! They probably never voted for Republicans in the first place! They're just Democrats trying to ruin our chances! The site has been infiltrated by BircherBuchananiteDUTrollDemInfiltratorMobyStormfronterracistxenophobantihispanicnazibigots and all they do is whine and bitchbithchbitchbitchbitch all the time."
Strange that your threads don't attract much of that?
I know, it's crazy! Sometimes I have to check & make sure I'm not on dummie underground with some of these threads.
both sides spend like drunken sailors-
so whats make one a liberal and the other a conservative? social issues. what will decide this election? social issues.
Right now I think Newt is our best hope and best chance to win.
