Well, I think education should be controlled at the local level. Let the school boards (local people) control the curriculum. I think most districts would make American History a required subject. You can always move to a different locale if you have to. It's much harder to move to a different state or country.

Don't you think there has to be some degree of uniformity? Otherwise, we might have Ebonics taught in Oakland and a gay curriculum taught in San Francisco. I know my examples are extreme and I am not a government school proponent by any means.

Without question, in my view, education is one of the essentials needed if the country is to be turned around... and it surely needs that.
