Maybe they could sell t-shirts or something. Maybe totebags made of those wonderful Peruvian woven textiles. 2000+ tourists/day is a heck of an opportunity to let slip away.
If you (Peru) can't stop drug runners from crossing one single friggin' 600 foot long bridge in your own country.....perhaps you need to find a new gig.
If a reasonable fee were charged to each visitor that went directly into proper maintenance of the site, and education of the tourists regarding proper behavior to preserve rather than degrade the site, then perhaps more could be an OK thing.
My mother visited there when she was in her late 70's and was very impressed although it was not easy for her.
