"Calderón used his appearance in Davos to promote Mexico as "a country that is ideal for foreign investment."

This idiot belongs on the comedy channel.

Severe restrictions on foreign ownership of land. Napoleonic law

Kidnap capital of the world (just beat out Colombia... no small feat in itself).

Crony-ism / Nepotism in government like the world has rarely seen

Did I miss something?

We do not deny private property, only that it must be conditioned to the collective well-being each day."

I think Hillary Clinton said the same thing.

"We do not deny private property, only that it must be conditioned to the collective well-being each day.""

"I think Hillary Clinton said the same thing."

An excerpted quote of Hillary from the "Oil Policy Speech Thread":

". . . The oil companies already got one delay, and we can't let that happen again . . . And if the oil companies won't step up to the plate . . . then they need to get out of the way . . ."

I think you and I might agree that Hillary is "conditioning the oil companies to the collective well-being" here.

he ought to realize that poverty in Mexico is increasing," Chávez added.

If he realized that he would be as certifiable as Chavez.

When Mexico criticizes your economic policies, then you KNOW you're in a mess.

The Venezuelan president then asked rhetorically, "Why do you think the United State wants to build a wall?

Because they are determined to keep out the avalanche of desperate poor who want to get in."

Hey! He finally gets something right!! IF the retard wasn't treating the people of Venezuela so badly, they wouldn't be trying to escape to the US.

"talking badly about other countries" indeed.

Chavez is a classic punk: He can dish it out, but he can't take it. Not even one-tenth of it.

Not taking it is more than just a sign of a punk -- and I totally agree with your comment -- it's also the sign of a bully.

Chavez is simply following the Castro model IMO.

"Chavez is simply following the Castro model IMO."

Chavez is whittling away slowly and is skillfully using all sorts of supposedly "democratic" artifices to achieve so many of his aims, which is certainly a major tactical difference between Hugo and Fidel.

But I find it hard to argue the notion that both Chavez and Fidel's goals are the same.

Seems he is slowly going toward a dictatorship.

Forgive me, a couple of beers during the game ...

We agree, and so far I have been very impressed with what Calderon is at least trying to do and change in Mexico.

Yes he truly is going to a dictatorship. Go to Publius Pundit to see it presented in exactly that light.

". . . so far I have been very impressed with what Calderon is at least trying to do and change in Mexico. . . ."

He's done okay so far, but unless he gets control of Pemex and modernizes the entire Mexican petroleum industry he will face serious budgetary shortcomings that could make things uncomfortable for him, by forcing him into the hands of the PRI, who will kill any reform program he attempts to launch unless he does so with momentum.

Everything I've seen so far is a warmup for the big show ... Pemex. And I think Calderon has done okay so far to set the stage. But I did not miss the point that at the very moment Calderon makes the public statement I highlighted in bold print in my blogged comments, the PRI congratulates Evo Morales -- both statements released the same day. I refuse to believe that from Calderon's perspective the two are not related. He's trying to gain international legitimacy for himself so that he can use it internally. That's a gamble. But I think he's doing okay in so far as executing that strategy.
