AUSTIN Nonprofit housing groups in Pharr and Brownsville have been approved for of a combined $2.9 million in loans to provide housing to people who live in colonias.
The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs on Thursday approved a $1.4 million loan for the Pharr Housing Community Development Corporation and $1.5 million for the CDC of Brownsville. The money comes from federal grants to the state.
Those nonprofit groups can use the money to buy land, develop lots, construct housing or give down-payment assistance, said Elena Peinado, legislative affairs adviser for TDHCA.
The organizations must use the money to target homebuyers who make no more than $25,860 for a family of four, she said.
Were trying to develop decent affordable housing so that people dont have to live in colonias, basically, Peinado said.
And the money must be used to get people who live in colonias into standard housing, said Gordon Anderson, spokesman for TDHCA.
TDHCA will lend the money to the Brownsville and Pharr housing groups either interest-free or through forgivable loans, depending on the financial situations of the clients those groups serve, Anderson said.
The program was developed after the Legislature in 2001 passed Senate Bill 322, requiring programs to help residents of colonias, Gordon said. Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr., D-Brownsville, sponsored the bill.
These funds will definitely improve the lives of many hard-working families and individuals who otherwise could never afford to achieve the American Dream, Lucio said in a prepared statement.

I guess it's too much to ask that taxpayer funding of the American Dream be limited to Americans or those here legally.

Sounds like cheap and badly done subdivisions in counties that have poor (or paid off) local Govt. Surprise. htt
Colonia is Spanish for Colony.
My mind's eye sees Hammas style 'refugee camps' providing a haven for people with different ideas of America's future than mine.
My mind's eye sees better quality barrios with the added feature of a 'diversified' system of law enforcement and social mandates - maxicano sharia (sp?).
My mind's eye sees recruiting centers for cartels and urban gangs.
My gut tells me this ain't good.

I think the problem exists because we have people making money instead of earning it!
Of course those tax dollars are for everyone else but our own citizens.
More of out taxpayer $$$ being given to Illegal Alien criminals.
