WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush praised the patriotism of Democrats, even as the Congress, now led by Democrats, largely opposed his new strategy for Iraq.
"We share a common goal, and that is to keep America safe," the president said in remarks to a House of Representatives Democratic conference in Williamsburg, Virginia.
"You know, I welcome debate in a time of war, and I hope you know that," he said, adding that he does not believe "that if you don't happen to agree with me you don't share the same sense of patriotism I do. You can get that thought out of your mind, if that's what some believe."
Democrats greeted several of his statements with warm applause.
On Iraq, he chose an issue on which he and Democrats are in consensus, in wanting Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to take responsibility for ensuring his country's security.
"I do know we agree on some things, and that is that the Maliki government is going to have to show strong leadership," Bush said.
He steered clear, however, of raising the issue of his proposed increase in the number of US troops in Iraq, which most Democrats seem to oppose.
On January 10, Bush announced a new strategy for Iraq, which involved deployment of an additional 21,500 troops. But the majority of Democrats and even some members of Bush's Republican Party appear poised to adopt a non-binding resolution next week expressing disagreement with the troop "surge."
What is: doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?
The President needs to understand he is dealing with a pack of dogs. Or maybe hyenas. And like the moslems, they will take advantage of anything they perceive as a weakness -
He seems to never learn, no matter how often they spit in his face.
I do not understand this one bit.
Perhaps the President is speaking in faith: "Calling things that be not as though they were . . . " (Romans 4:17)
They'd oppose him either way, so it certainly can't hurt.
Ya gotta remember how he was raised. The Bushes have always suffered from "liberal envy." In 2003, his father awarded the George H.W. Bush Excellence in Public Service Award to Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts.
It runs in the family.
If so, he's been using that technique with Islam as well: "A religion of love and peace."
It hasn't worked with the Muslims, and it won't work with the Donkeys.
Islam is the religion of peace.
The democrats are the pary of patriotism.
The sun sets in the south..........
Cue Barry White music
Nope, not true. He was just acting presidential. What should he have done, start a fight, and accuse them all of being unpatriotic? What on earth would that have accomplished? They are the ones who invited him to speak, and he would have been less than a "gracious" guest if he had acted otherwise.
Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle. There is a wide spectrum between starting a fight, and showering your political enemies with glowing accolades and feigned affection.
What's Bush drinking; to hail the patriotism of the RATS is disgraceful. The RATS are as anti-American as Al-Qaeda, and want nothing more than to lose the war. Bush should call a spade a spade and let the chips fall where they may. They've been beating him up for years and he sits there and takes it. I wish the hell he'd fight back.
He means what he says...BTW there will always be water toters ;)
He's pouring coals on there heads. It's what Jesus told us to do to our enemies. He's fighting the evil within them.
The Bushes have always suffered from "liberal envy."

It shows -- sadly taking a huge toll on the political base and platform of the Repub party. Just look at it -- a disgusting feckless bunch of people that might as well not even be in Washington....
WHAT A KISS-ASS!!!
Dubya just is not capable of learning that playing nicey nice with the dems is a loser all the way around. A pity.
Has he gone insane?
Agreed.
This is a "Islam is the religion of peace" moment. How truly horrible being the President of the United States must be at times. I pray for President Bush every day. I didn't even do that for Ronald Reagan!
