'Buy America' provisions Rep Duncan Hunter, House Armed Services Committee chairman, inserted into House version of bill authorizing coming year's defense budget have set him on collision course with his many friends at Pentagon and among military contractors that buy many parts abroad; his proposal would cut back sharply on foreign content allowed in American military goods and provide list of items that only American companies could supply; Defense Sec Ronald H Rumsfeld has said he will ask Pres Bush to veto 2004 Pentagon budget if Hunter does not back down; Hunter defends proposal, interview; table and graph of foreign shares in jet fighter program

We know that Duncan Hunter is protectionist, and strong on Defense. Back in 2003 it appears the former took priority over the latter. Maybe some DH acolytes can fill us in on what happened back in 2003.

I'd like to help you out but, when accessing the link one has to take the following action.

"To read this archive article, upgrade to TimesSelect or purchase as a single article"

Since I am no fan of the NYT and don't want a 14 day free trial, or make a onetime purchase of the article, why don't you, upgrade to TimesSelect or purchase as a single article, so we can read it in it's entirety?

I don't subscribe to any of the leftest papers free on line trials either. I don't buy any of their papers so why should support them on line.

DOes it really make sense to procure our sensitive and quite important military equipment and parts from outside the US? WE already get FAR too much of our oil from folks that hate us and want us dead -

It's kind of like how alarmed I have become at how much of our food supply now comes from CHINA. I just cannot comprehend buying necessities from CHINA or any other part of the world where we face any sort of threat. The more we import, the less we make ourselves - and industries forget how to make some things...

Why would you assume that having US contractors buid the weapons substems is a bad thing? It may save a few bucks but is that what matter in preparations for war?

Union Toadie? You totally misread what was said. Hunter was for keeping Foreign components out of any of the Military goods. Absolutely amazing!

A few post on this thread already shows me the deep divide among "Conservatives" in here. This is truly astonishing but predictable.

One more thing. Let's understand RUDY is "NOT" a Conservative and does not have any Conservative leanings.

Well, geez, sorry for posting an article from the liberal MSM New York Times. Here is an article from Newsmax , if you want your info from a non-MSM source. And sorry that the article from 2003 is in archival. The Full article is posted here at a different site.

I posted the article because I came across it and I hadn't seen it discussed at FR. It demonstrates that Hunter was no backbencher, but was making an impact in Washington. There is an article discussing it at Hunter's website . Hunter is proud of his "Buy America" defense program. My bringing it up here is hardly a hit on Hunter.

If Hunter becomes more formidable in the campaign he will need defend his record. The "Buy America" provision was controversial amongst conservatives at the time. Better for Hunter that it should be hashed out in the friendly confines of FR now.

No I am not a Rudy fan. I support Romney. I think Hunter is a great conservative Congressman, but would make a losing GOP Presidential candidate. I don't like his protectionism, and his record of big spending, of which this "Buy America" provision is an example of both.

With friends like Hunter, who needs enemies.

This post from 2003 is misleading.

Rumsfeld's view of Hunter is more clear in his speech honoring DH last September 2006 for the Keeper of the Flame Award.

We can help ourselves, by shopping at a store which uses our LOCAL farmers.

Here in San Diego we have a couple - and I love to buy my veggies and fruits from them .. they actually have flavor .. when I cut a cucumber, the aroma waffs up immediately. With hothouse cukes, you don't have that great aroma. Same with tomatoes or carrots.

No way in Hell am I going to purchase an article from the NYT.

$5.00 for a liberal rag?

I don't think so!

I'd rather give it to the Duncan Hunter for President campaign. LOL!!
