I think it's photoshopped.
One of the most difficult things to do in a flat environment like on Arctic ice or the open ocean is to see things at a distance. I would imagine that a high place might come in handy when scouting out a meal.

Give me a break; can you tell me how the polar bears could've possibly survived the medieval warm period? When Greenland was green & they were growing grapes in England. Obviously they survived 'cause they're still here...
The fact is the earth warms every 1500 tears or so & crippling the west's economies will do nothing to prevent it...
Have you seen this guy's other wildlife photos? He has a studio in La Jolla, CA. He has a lot of these photos in huge formats (3'x5' and larger). I can't believe the shots he gets.
