NEWTON, Iowa - Maytag is voluntarily recalling 2.3 million Maytag and Jenn-Air brand dishwashers because of faulty wiring, the company and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement released Thursday.
The recalled appliances are blamed for causing 135 fires and four injuries.
Affected dishwashers were sold at department and appliances stores between July 1997 and June 2001 and sold at prices between $370 and $800. The dishwashers were manufactured in the United States.
The machines should immediately be disconnected from electrical power by shutting off a circuit breaker or disconnecting a fuse, the CPSC said.
Maytag will provide free in-home repair or a $75 cash back reimbursement on the purchase of a new Maytag, Jenn-Air, Whirlpool or KitchenAid dishwasher.
The company said liquid rinse-aid can leak from the appliances' dispenser into internal wiring and short-circuit and ignite.
Maytag has received 135 reports of dishwasher fires, resulting in product and/or property damage. Four injuries have been reported, including three reports of smoke inhalation and one serious hand laceration as the consumer was operating a fire extinguisher to put out a dishwasher fire.
The recall involves under-counter or portable plastic tub dishwashers with black, white, almond, bisque or stainless steel front panels.
Maytag, once the nation's third largest appliance maker, was bought by Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool Corp. on March 31, 2006, in a deal valued at $2.6 billion.

Good night, Norm.
:)
I guess that Maytag repairman isn't so lonely anymore.
But,, But.. I'm not tired.
Oh,
G'Nite :-)
We did a kitchen remodel a couple years ago and got rid of the dishwasher altogether. Don't miss it a bit, we never used the old one anyway.
Thanks for the heads up on the Built in USA tidbit.
Check where the individual parts are made and you'll find a different country.
Riiiiiiiiiight! :)
The Domino's Pizza boxes get all wrinkly in there anyway.
Not everything manufactured in the USA is/was quality.
135 out of 2.3 million? Pretty low failure rate!
Regards.
"135 out of 2.3 million? Pretty low failure rate!"
It really is low, and look at the year of manufacture involved (1997-2001)Most people dont even drive 10 year old cars!
Our Maytag Neptune washing machine caused a fire that did over $70,000 damage to our home. Maytag's response--to drop us from their "preferred customer list." We are happy to see the word get out about the danger of these appliances before someone gets killed.
I hope Whirlpool factored this problem into their bid when they purchased Maytag.
William Jefferson won't be buying a Maytag to launder his cool cash bribes after hearing this .
I have a three year old piece of crap maytag dishwasher which has only run about half the time I have owned it. The enitre electronics board keeps shorting out. The repair man tells me it is because "you keep getting it wet". He says that dishwashers shouldn't be near water, like my sink.
