First Lady of the Hamptons, Judith Giuliani (Come On In & Get to know Judy!)

Judith Giuliani is creating a rose garden at the Hamptons summer home she shares with her husband, Rudy Giuliani. And while there are many people on both sides of the aisle who hope this foreshadows a bid for the White House, Judith will say only: “I just love digging in the dirt; I am obsessed with gardening.”

Of course it requires uninterrupted downtime, something that has become a rarity for the woman whose role has developed into one half of a power couple on the move. In the past four years, the pair has traveled to over 20 countries. This spring his emphasis shifted to domestic pit stops where he stumped for Republican candidates in Iowa, Georgia and Michigan. Judith's weekend reading has recently included The Emancipator's Wife, a biography of Mary Todd Lincoln she borrowed from Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton. But, in reply to the question on everybody's mind: “Will Rudy be on the ballot in 2008?” the discreet Mrs. Giuliani will say only, “My parents were married for more than 50 years. All I've ever wanted is a happy marriage and Rudy and I have one. My mother used to tell me the trick was in knowing when to say, ‘whatever makes you happy.' Well, if it makes him happy, I will support him every step of the way.”

Judith Giuliani was not overtly political when she met her future husband. “I remember one of our first conversations. I was explaining that I am a nurse, that I had been working with Bristol-Myers Squibb, and that my arena was in infectious diseases,” she reflects. “We both had our passions; we each brought something unique to the table.” Their partnership has drawn Rudy closer to the medical charities with which Judith aligns herself, and last week the American Heart Association honored the Giulianis at its annual Heart of the Hamptons benefit in Water Mill. “The real champion of the night was Dr. Valentine Fuster,” injects Judith. “He is known around the world as the father of cardiology.” Judith chose to focus her attention on the topic of heart disease, particularly in women, because she says, “heart disease is the number one killer of women in America.” Seven times more women die from heart disease than from breast cancer, she added, and women's symptoms are different. “Whereas men will get the classic symptoms, women may get those, or other flu-like symptoms such as general malaise or nausea. Because many women are such multi-taskers they often just attribute this to fatigue and may not seek treatment.”

An inveterate multi-tasker herself, Judith is also working on developing a Level One trauma center for Saint Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan. It will serve as a response center for potential nuclear, biological, and chemical attacks: “N.B.C., that's become the buzzword in medical circles,” she adds. “The center will mean a physician from every different medical specialty will be on call 24 hours a day.” Judith also raises money for Cabrini High School for Girls in the Bronx, a template for educating at-risk women that has since been copied in states across the nation. And in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Judith rallied the Giulianis' friends to address the crisis in New Orleans. “When Katrina hit, I wanted to do a fund-raiser for inoculations and hospital supplies. I called Donald Trump and we put together a golf tournament. Donald was wonderful. We raised well over $1 million.”

The couple has made a point of golfing on many of their international trips. “I will tell you how fanatical we are. We flew to an event in Singapore and arrived early in the morning. We left the plane in golf clothes, played the course, then showered at the club and changed into black tie for the event we were attending. After that we headed back to the plane.”

Rudy Giuliani discovered golf as a young boy sneaking onto the Garden City Country Club at night with friends to hit balls, later buying his first set of clubs as a law student at NYU. Now the man associated with cleaning up the urban jungles of New York finds a retreat from the public eye on the bucolic green links. On a recent Saturday afternoon, he joins Judith on her HamptonStyle photo shoot, fresh from a day spent on the course and full of anecdotes from the game. For the mayor Americans see as an indelible New York institution, the transition from his native Brooklyn to the South Fork has been natural. He spent his first full summer in the Hamptons just a few years ago when he was writing his memoir and serving his last year as mayor. “The spirit of Long Island is an extension of New York City for me. When I was about 16 and learning how to drive, I can remember winding down North Fork roads; the farmland, the beaches...it's a unique part of this country.”

When the couple is in residence at their new home, Rudy also uses the respite to read and unwind with a cigar; his humidor is never far afield. As Judith remarks, “One of my favorite pictures of Rudy is of him reading with a cigar on the porch out here. My husband is so brilliant; he can read two books at once. One will be the biography of a political figure, and the other will be something lighter: for him that might be a history of Russia.” More recently, Rudy has been alternating between Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography of Lincoln and Cobra II, the harrowing account of the Iraqi invasion, written by Michael Gordon and Bernard Trainor.

But for a moment, in the late afternoon sun, the man known as “America's Mayor” has a moment to think of lighter things. First of all, there's baseball. The Yankees are up. And then, there's his lovely wife. Of Judith, his multilingual, philanthropic spouse, he says simply, “She gets me to unwind from all of the pressures and just relax. I love her.”

In a contest between liberal and liberal-lite, the liberal will win every time.

I think Limbaugh said something like that.

If Giuliani is nominated, it will eat you alive when Rush throws his support behind Rudy.

Rush says alot of things, one thing Rush has stated over and over again is he would not support a third party candidacy in the general election, because third parties largely are irrelevant, and uninspiring.

Maybe if you ended each of your posts with an N at the bottom to use more bandwidth, your posts would be clear.

Excellent idea.

Hardly. What Limbaugh does or does not do doesn't effect me in the least.

What it will do is prove once and for all that Limbaugh is an opportunistic gas bag. But it's not like we really needed any further proof of that.

You need to remember that Rush does have great political influence... AND he's an entertainer, truly. I think people sometimes give him "godlike" status, in a foolish way.

Right. What you do or don't do won't affect Rush and his 20 million listeners.

All radio hosts are. They're supposed to be entertaining, or they wouldn't have anyone listening to them.

Then I figure we're just about even.

Anybody who needs Limbaugh to help them decide who to vote for probably shouldn't be allowed the franchise anyway.

Nope, it was for THE DISASTER RELIEF FUND, which took place shortly after 9/11. It just sticks in your craw, that he managed to get *gasp* homosexuals to donate $200,000 to the DISASTER RELIEF FUND, in Oct. of '01.

It was the Empire State Pride Agenda. Go look it up. ESPA is a radical gay group which advocates for gay "equality" in everything. More specifically, they advocate for gay marriage, gay adoptions, an openly gay military, etc. I'm trying to find the original link that I had that showed that Giuliani agreed to appear at the event BEFORE 9/11. I've seen it, but I can't find it this morning.

In the interest of accuracy, I have to say that I've found that I misinterpreted the multiple reports of "Giuliani agreed to appear in drag for the Empire State Pride Agenda" to mean that he actually appeared in drag AT the October 2001 event. I've since learned, in digging for the link that reported that he agreed to appear there before 2001, that I was wrong. What is being widely reported is that Giuliani agreed to appear in drag for the Empire State Pride Agenda later on the gay soft porn show "Queer as Folk" if the group raised $100,000 at the event. Go look it up yourself if you don't believe me.

- Appearing in drag in front of a few hundred gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender freaks to legitimize their deviancy and raise funds for their causes - (Dress, makeup, women's underwear, heels - $200).
- Appearing in drag on a national gay soft porn cable TV show to legitimize gay soft porn and their deviancy - (Priceless)

I'm still looking for reports of whether Giuliani actually appeared on "Queer as Folk". If I can get the episode, I'll certainly post the video. However, it appears that he lied to ESPA and never appeared even though they had it all lined up for him. I searched IMDB and other websites, and while I see that Giuliani appeared on SNL in drag and on a few episodes of Howard Stern's perverted TV show among the other shows he's appeared on, I can't confirm an appearance on Queer as Folk. Still digging.

My original point is that the drag thing was not a one-time occurance. You can see from the photos that it happened several times, once for a nationally broadcast comedy program (SNL) in 1997 and he also agreed to appear in drag on the gay soft porn show "Queer as Folk". Your original argument was that he appeared ONCE and for a CHARITY. I guess we were both wrong to some extent. But it doesn't change the fact that Giuliani raised money for ESPA and he agreed to appear in drag to raise more. Worse, he agreed to appear in drag on a national soft gay porn cable TV show to raise that money.

By the way, all the digging I did this morning turned up a little gem from Giuliani's run for the Senate where a chapter of the National Organization of Women endorsed him over Hillary Clinton. That's right, in 2000 the Dulles Chapter of NOW endorsed Giuliani over Hillary Clinton.

Hell no, he didn't wear a dress "several times".

Look at all the photos and videos of Giuliani wearing a dress. There are several different dresses from several different occasions. I'm still trying to get the SNL video where he appeared in drag there.

I found this while digging this morning too. Not only did Giuliani appear at the Empire State Pride Agenda event that included recognizing the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered police, fire, and other employees of the city, but earlier that year he declared June 18th to be "Out in Government Day".

MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS JUNE 18th OUT IN GOVERNMENT DAY

City Hall Ceremony Salutes Lesbian and Gay Pride and History Month

Deputy Mayor for Community Development and Business Services Rudy Washington, on behalf of Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, today honored the Coalition of Lesbian and Gay City Employees by declaring June 18th Out in Government Day in a City Hall ceremony commemorating Lesbian and Gay Pride and History Month. The Coalition of Gay and Lesbian employees was founded in 1992 and is open to all current and former employees of the City of New York in all areas of City government, including elected officials and retirees from city service.

Accepting the proclamation were Judy Ramos, Co-Chair of Out in Government and an employee of the Department of Transportation, and David Warren, a Board Member of Firefighters Lesbian and Gay and a civilian employee of the New York City Fire Department. The Deputy Mayor also presented Certificates of Recognition to Beverly Copeland, Assistant Commissioner of Policy and Development at DCAS, and Lt. Don Jirak, President of the Gay Officers Action League (GOAL) and a member of the New York City Police Department. Christopher Lynn, Executive Director of the Mayor's Task Force for the Board of Elections, served as Master of Ceremonies for the event.

"The Giuliani Administration has consistently recognized the contributions of gays and lesbians to New York City," Deputy Mayor Washington said. "As part of the Administration's overall policy of supporting gay and lesbian rights, the Mayor signed into law the landmark domestic partnership legislation in 1998 - a measure that extended long-awaited protections to gay and lesbian couples."

"I want to thank the organizers of the Coalition of Lesbian and Gay City Employees for providing an important forum to raise gay and lesbian issues. Since its founding in 1992, the Coalition has been a staunch defender of the rights of gay and lesbian municipal employees," Deputy Mayor Washington continued.

June is Lesbian and Gay Pride and History Month in New York City. This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village; the 15th anniversary of the groundbreaking citywide lesbian and gay rights law prohibiting discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations; and the 3rd anniversary of the domestic partnership legislation which provides full benefits to the partners of gay and lesbian employees in New York City.

I'm not talking videos.

I'm still trying to get the SNL video where he appeared in drag there.

That'll prove nothing beyond him mocking himself.
