NFL won't let church show game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The NFL has nixed a church's plans to use a wall projector to show the Colts-Bears Super Bowl game, saying it would violate copyright laws.

NFL officials spotted a promotion of Fall Creek Baptist Church's "Super Bowl Bash" on the church Web site last week and overnighted a letter to the pastor demanding the party be canceled, the church said.

But the NFL objected to the church's plans to use a projector to show the game, saying the law limits it to one TV no bigger than 55 inches.

The church will likely abandon its plans to host a Super Bowl party.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league's long-standing policy is to ban "mass out-of-home viewing" of the Super Bowl. An exception is made for sports bars and other businesses that show televised sports as a part of their everyday operations.

"We have contracts with our (TV) networks to provide free over-the-air television for people at home," Aiello said. "The network economics are based on television ratings and at-home viewing. Out-of-home viewing is not measured by Nielsen."

< snip >

"It just frustrates me that most of the places where crowds are going to gather to watch this game are going to be places that are filled with alcohol and other things that are inappropriate for children," Newland said. "We tried to provide an alternative to that and were shut down."

Other Indiana churches said they are deciding whether they should go through with their Super Bowl party plans, given the NFL's stance.

seems to me the group that MIGHT have watched the superbowl is now going to do something else.

I don't even bother. It is a corporate ego trip. The commercials are available online if I am THAT desperate to watch ads

AND

Who the HELL is the NFL to tell me what size my TV can be?

NFL = NO ------- Logic.

What can I tell you? Got the info from a Google search.

The NFL and their lawyers say they can do this, the NFL and their lawyers are the ones to explain it to you.

Note that I am not taking their side. Just stating a fact.

I think that is NFL POLICY.

Professional sports dies a little bit more today thanks to the NFL suits.

A professional wrestling league should jump on this NFL PR fiasco.

They said that all tailgating was banned within a mile of teh stadium. They didn't say on their property.

Besides, the NF L shows here that it thinks all property is NFL property.

So your contention is that it's not against the law and what the NFL is doing is completely illegal?

Lt's go over this: Say I have a big projector TV. (I don't, but let's say I do for purposes of argument.) Let's also say that I have room in my house for hundreds of people at a time. So I invite thse hundreds of friends over on Sunday night and I put on the football game on my projector TV. I even refer to it as the Super Bowl. Please tell me what law I have broken. That is essentially what this church was doing.

Perhaps the NFL thinks they are entitled to a per inch franchise fee.

I think I can very comfortably say "I don't care about the superbowl" and do something useful on sunday.

Hey, if that's the way you want to interpret it, have at it. But the NFL will not be shutting down any barbecues on private property.

So now all this chuch need do is sell a spagetti luncheon and advertise they have a projection screen TV without mentioning the foot ball.

Actually, sicne the church is in teh Eastern time zone and the game is on around 6:30 Eastern, it would have to be a spaghetti dinner.

If it's on the airwaves, it can be shown, according to FCC rules. Sounds like the NFL wants to overstate their importance.

I don't think I'll be watching the game this year.

I'm not familiar with the intracacies of the law. But I'm sure the NFL and their lawyers are. I can't tell you if you are breaking a law or what the law is. But I'm pretty sure that the NFL is not going to tell a church that they can't hold the event they wanted without a firm legal footing. Again, are you contending that the NFL is doing what they are doing with no legal justification? I suppose it's possible, but I seriously doubt it.

answer NONE.

The NFL is being penny wise and pound foolish.

Some NFL suit is affraid that somehow they will not be able to measure or charge for a football party. They fear people will have paid admission parties to see NFL games.

So now instead of 100 or 200 new fans, the NFL has turned 100 or 200 church parishioners into NFL anti-fans.

the lingerie bowl could give them a free access but somehow I don't think the church would go for it.

But the NFL will not be shutting down any barbecues on private property.

http://cbs4.com/sports/local_story_025154548.html Tailgating Forbidden For Super Bowl

CBS4) MIAMI Die-hard football fans attending the Super Bowl game at Dolphin Stadium are getting a rude awakening after finding out that no tailgating of any type will be allowed on game day within one mile of the stadium.

"There is no tailgating allowed in the Dolphin Stadium parking lots," Sue Jaquez, a member of the Super Bowl XLI Host Committee, confirmed on Tuesday. "And there is no tailgating anywhere within a one-mile radius of the stadium." "And there are no RVs allowed."

Tailgating is permitted during regular- and post-season games for Dolphins fans, a team official on Tuesday said it would indeed be allowed at the Super Bowl. According to Jaquez, however, the official has been seriously misinformed.

The Dolphins do not organize and oversee the Super Bowl, Jaquez pointed out. Instead, those duties are left up to NFL officials. And because of security reasons, no pre-game partying on (or very near) the premises will take place. Fans spotted tailgating could face charges, Jaquez said.

"This is part of the NFL, not the Dolphins," Jaquez said. "If the Dolphins are saying there's tailgating -- or think it's going to be allowed -- then they need to contact the NFL."

Detective Nelda Fonticella of the Miami-Dade Police confirmed the Super Bowl rules.

If caught grilling or consuming alcohol within that one-mile radius of Dolphins Stadium, fans initially "will be warned and asked to pick up their things and leave," Fonticella said. "We're trying to make this a pleasant experience for everyone, and there will be plenty to do in the week leading up to the game."

I believe it has to do with using the word SUPERBOWL. You can't use Superbowl. Big game party that coincides with exact date and time of that big game. Crazzzy!!!!

So if I ask you in this public forum who you think is going to win the Super Bowl, I just violated the NFL's copyright? Give me a flipping break!

This is what happens when you make the son of a liberl RINO Senator your commissioner.

Can Rush not make his "Super Bowl" prediction on Friday without violating some law?

Call me crazy, I don't believe that anyone is going to be arrested for drinking beer or barbecuing on their own property. I think it's only implied, but obvious that in the article you quoted, they are not talking about private residences.
