New Boeing 797 Giant "Blended Wing" Passenger Airliner-Fiction!

Summary of the eRumor: The story says that the Boeing Company is developing a radical new passenger jetliner that will carry 1,000 passengers. It's designated the 797 and is a "blended wing" design looking a lot like the old flying wing experiments of the 50's.

The Truth: TruthOrFiction.com went straight to the source, the Boeing Company. A spokesperson said that it is not true that Boeing is developing a commercial blended wing aircraft. He asked that we help stop the perpetuation of the story.

What is true, according to Boeing, is that Boeing Phantom Works, the company's advanced research and development organization, is doing research on the blended wing body design as a potential military aircraft. Boeing has built a scale model to test its low-speed flying characteristics in a wind tunnel. There are also plans (as of 7/13/07) to flight test...

....blended wing" design looking a lot like the old flying wing experiments of the 50's.

And the B-2 bomber of today.

At other sites, I read the 797 'story' quite awhile ago. While I'm certain that it could be done, the airport infrastructure changes required would make a passenger version problematic.

Witness the heartburn over handling the A380's load.

" research on the blended wing body design as a potential military aircraft"

Boeing's 747 was a military design as well but "lost" to Lockheed's C-5.

OK, who's got the "picture" of a Federation starship being produced at a Boeing facility?

Excuse me, but, I just picked up the latest Popular Mechanics, p21, and they have an article on just this plane with a photo of a 21 ft (wingspan) model!!

It is called the X48B and it is announced this model will under go tests at Dryden soon.

There was talk of providing each seat with a LCD screen and the ability to select from multiple cameras placed on the surface of the aicraft.

But, for those who have a real window, it's a better view than ever before.

That's a nice picture, but I was referring to something on the WWW a while back showing the actual (obviously Photoshopped) construction of a Star Trek starship being produced at a Boeing facility.

I think it would be complete idiocy to build a Blended Wing Design passenger jet that can carry 1000 as a first model. Its way too risky as it will be costly. Better to build a Blended Wing Design jet that can carry 100-200 first before trying something bigger

Cool! I'll just pop over in my Flying Car to check it out!

The windows would be forward facing, which would be waaaay cool on take-offs and landings.

Race, it's Popular Mechanics.

I'm still waiting for those nuclear powered, freighter blimps they promised back in 1977.

You guys!!

They even have pictures of the model, too

Check it out, it could be a reality, it only makes sense, a huge lifting body

Bernoulli tried it in the 30's with plywood

Nowadays, it can be done with composites and aluminum

quite doable

too big to park next to your helicopter, though.....

Northrop was flying big flying wings back in the 50s, before fly-by-wire and computerized control. There is no reason this can't be done today.

Frankly, I think it would be great. Even if you sacrifice 10% off the cruise speed, it would be so fuel efficient, it would still be attractive. I would spend an extra half hour getting coast-to-coast if it dropped the cost of a ticket by $100.00.

And the thing is nice and low to the ground, with the engines on top like that. I'm thinking integral stairways with ground level access. That would simplify airport design greatly.
