Reagan was the finest President of my lifetime and I don't think I will see anyone better.
History will rate him very well.

Thanks for the post. If another "Reagan" doesn't show up in time for 2008, I'm sure one will emerge by 2012. And Lord knows we will need him!

I disagree Mr. Meese. Americans have lost (or given away) the ability to govern themselves (which was Reagan's central message).

Why did the Republicans lose in the 2006 election? I would suggest to you it is not because they were conservative, but rather because too many of them, particularly the leadership in both houses, had essentially abandoned the conservative principles on which many of them had run for office. We only have to look at the spending that took place. We have to look at the expansion of government. Exactly. Bush the Elder lost in 1992 for abandoning the Reagan legacy. The GOP won Congress in 1994 by returning to such. And the GOP managed to drift far enough away by 2006 that they lost again.
That is the constant.

Meese may be something of an optimist. I think that it will be nearly impossible to rebuild the reagan coalition with the current crop of 'Pubbies.
The whole reason that the 'Pubbies lost the Congress last year was NOT because of the Iraq War as the MSM is fond of telling us, it is because the 'Pubbies had gone selectively deaf and the voters couldn't distinguish the 'Pubbies from the socialists.
To rebuild the Reagan colaition, Meese, et al, will have to start with a new bunch of unknowns and train them in the value of conservatism and in the vision that Reagan brought. Then, he'll have to teach them to ignore the scandalous blathert that the MSM will say about them and to be true to their ideals as conservatives.
Good luck. In today's "touchy/feely feel good" world, I don't think any of us will live long enough to see another Reagan revolution come to fruition.

Great stuff! Thanks for posting this.
Did you know that Giuliani once called conservative Edwin Meese - Ronald Reagan's Attorney General - "a sleaze".
