Street Only Somewhat Right On War And Crime
Philadelphia Evening Bulletin (philly's conservative paper) ^ | 1/31/2007 | Michael Tremoglie

Recently, while meeting with the editorial board of The Philadelphia Daily News, Mayor John Street suggested that the war in Iraq was the cause of the city's gun violence increase.

According to a Daily News article, Hizzoner said, "I believe the fact that we are a country at war has something to do with the attitude of people in the streets. Let me tell you, it's not just this city. I have seen it everywhere and I've talked to people a lot about it ... . We are a country that is becoming less and less civil. We are a place where people will pull out a gun and shoot it at the drop of a hat"

I like the author but it is a stretch to compare the Iraq War with WWI, the Civil War and WWII. The mayor is a buffoon..

That's from your "Vietnam Created Charles Manson" page in the playbook. I'm less than astonished.

I work with a guy who was in law enforcement in Philly up unti a couple of years ago.

I think there are many more factors that were present well before the war in Iraq such as -

crack
gangs
single mom welfare villages
gangsta rap mentality among youth
a joke of a juvenile justice system
public housing (lets put all of the above into a small area)

I would also bet there are now more men between the ages of 16-24.

The mayor should put the blame on himself and others who support the welfare state.

We had the same thing in the 1960's when I went to Temple University. Only Mayor Rizzo kicked ass. The Democrats have been cowed by the criminals and yet they blame everyone except their cowardly selves.

The City of Brothers Love should be called "The City of Brotherly Murder".

Street is a disgrace and a fool. Hey, why doesn't he run for the mayor of New Orleans? Just his kind of city, and he can blame Hurricane Katrina and Pres. Bush for all the crime there, in the past, in the future, and in his dreams.

Well said.

From what I understand the gangbangers have taken over in Philly and the criminal sentences are a complete joke.

Liberalism reminds me of the Monty Python skit.

It's only a flesh wound!

Philly should get the same treatment Hillary wants for Iraq.
