Let us contemplate some wisdom from a media ethics expert quoted by The New York Times this week:
"To most journalists, the notion of anonymous reporters relying on anonymous sources is a red flag. 'If you want to talk about a business model that is designed to manufacture mischief in large volume, that would be it,' said Ralph Whitehead Jr., a professor of journalism at the University of Massachusetts."
No, he wasn't talking about the Associated Press' (and the Washington Post's and the Los Angeles Times' and the New York Times') anonymous stringers relying on unnamed and unreliable sources reporting (or rather, rumor-mongering) on the war in Iraq.
No, he wasn't talking about the anonymous reporter identified only as "an Iraqi employee of The New York Times from Najaf" in three stories just this week, which quoted various unnamed Iraqi clerics, residents and officials.
No, Professor Whitehead was talking about the swiftly and widely discredited InsightMag.com story about Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., attending a madrassa as a child. Fox News Channel (for which I am a contributor see, transparency's not so hard) took a pounding for picking up the inaccurate story. The liberal media pile-on continues despite the network's immediate acknowledgement of error in repeating the false charges and despite the fact that Fox didn't originate the story.
Unlike, say, CBS News, Dan Rather and the faked National Guard memos.
Meanwhile, CBS News has another potential controversy on its hands involving unnamed sources that Professor Whitehead and The New York Times won't get around to flogging. On the left-wing MediaChannel.org website, supporters of CBS chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan published a mass e-mail she had sent out asking for "help."

I'm onboard for that. Kill it.
Not even what the story was about. That is what is killing me. It was about the Clinton flunkies doing research on Obama and that they were going to float this right before the primaries.
That Obama downplayed his Muslim roots and the muslim schools he went to.
Its like they just are ignoring the real story and making their own one up an then bashing Insight Magazine.
Insight didn't say the story was gospel. the thrust of the story was that the Clinton camp was puching it. Insight stands by this.
The MSM twisted this into Insight smearing both Obama and Clinton.
puching = pushing
I'll bring the mallet.
I just loved this article today. The MSM gets busted more and more everyday, one would think that they are getting tired of being busted enough to change their ways.
Oh well, if it must get worse for them before it gets better, I guess that is their choice.
Malkin just plain rocks!
On the bright side, the NY Times lost 600 mil last quarter.
But of course.
Insight Magazine, instead of being the piñata of the left in this whole saga, should have come right out and identified their unnamed sources.
She's on the money most of the time. She's been on a few tangents though. But she is relentless in exposing the media shills.
The MSM is collapsing, and we must do everthing in our power to drive a stake through its treasonous heart.
____
That's wishful thinking but patently untrue.
The media turned this country against the War On Terror with help from the left.
The media went full bore this last election, not even caring who said they were unfair in a concentrated, orchestrated drive to put Democrats back in power.
Most people on the periphery of politics "go along" with what they think the masses are thinking, what popular opionion is, etc.
Republicans still manage to win elections, imagine if the networks were as slanted to the right as they are to the left, the Democrats would be lucky to get 35-40% of the vote. Republican voters are self-starters who actually take time to understand the issues (mostly).
See Sean Hannity's man on the street interviews for people who vote democrat, they can't identify the Vice President, etc. But only "racists" vote republican.
The ONLY hope is to have a conservative network, there is a mass audience for it, where is the billionaire or conglomerate stepping in to fill this market void??
The networks operate as a left wing propaganda machine and it seems that there is no changing it, why? I don't know, insert your conspiracy theory here. They probably won't sell even if offered twice the actual worth for the power to control public opinion and sway elections, that's real power.
I heard Rush say that it was the Clinton campaign that was shopping the story around.
Amazing that CBS couldn't find out that information .. but instead hammers the conservative entities involved.
The editor of Insight said that its two people inside the Hillary campaign or it was two reporters who work for a liberal newspaper got it from inside the Clinton campaign.
Something to that effect, I forget which.
I am hoping at some point they will come out with their source, though I won't hold my breath.
I'll bring the steaks...er, stakes...oh hell, I'll bring the steaks, too. How do you like yours?
Obama was listed as a muslim student in the school. Blame his father for the paperwork but it is truth.
I understand it was two Clinton insiders.
The MSM is losing viewership and readership. The battles for the new media have begun.
Yes, they are still powerful, but they cannot sustain and continue hemorraging like they have been. Meanwhile the NY Post (right of center) continues to grow, Fox News sits atop the cable ratings, and the right wing blogosphere is coming into its own.
But yes, a conservative version of the USA Today would be a helpful.
Obama's mother, divorced from Obama's father, married a man from Indonesia named Lolo Soetoro, and the family relocated to the country from 1967-71. At first, Obama attended the Catholic school, Fransiskus Assisis, where documents showed he enrolled as a Muslim, the religion of his stepfather. The document required that each student choose one of five state-sanctioned religions when registering Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic or Protestant. Gibbs said he wasn't sure why the document had Obama listed as a Muslim.
"Senator Obama has never been a Muslim," Gibbs said. "As a six-year-old in Catholic school, he studied the catechism."
The Illinois senator is a member of the United Church of Christ.
