Election 2008: Joe Biden tossed his hat into the presidential ring Wednesday, along with some choice racial gaffes. Curiously enough, his fellow Democrats had little to say about this. We'd like to know why.
The senior senator from Delaware said he'd run for president as a foreign policy wizard, but in a wide-ranging interview with the New York Observer he didn't exactly show any diplomacy. He badmouthed other candidates and did little to show voters what he has on offer.
However, Biden didn't conceal a thing. Commenting on rival Barack Obama, Biden all but told him he was a credit to his race: "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," Biden told the New York Observer. "I mean, that's a storybook, man."
So let us get this straight mainstream black Americans whose achievements surpass Biden's, like Colin Powell and Vernon Jordan and Condoleezza Rice, are somehow all mumbling dullards, shucking and jiving, unwashed and ugly? One wonders what Biden's view of ordinary African-Americans is, the non-storybook crowd, and presumably people whose vote he seeks.
This isn't the first time Biden's mouth and ego have gone into overdrive to the insult of others. He's spewed many racial gaffes with little political consequence. A Google search of "Joe Biden" and "gaffe" turns up 44,200 entries.
