Breaking: 'Hoax Devices' Found At Several Boston Locations (Several 'Suspicous Packages' Found)
Boston.com ^ | January 31, 2007

BOSTON -- Four "hoax devices" were found at several Boston locations Wednesday, hours after officials detonated a suspicious package on an elevated structure above the Sullivan Square Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority station.

The additional packages were found at the Boston University Bridge, the Longfellow Bridge and near the intersection of Stuart and Columbus streets. A device described by officials as a pipe bomb was found in the basement of the Tufts New England Medical Center at 185 Harrison Ave.

A spokesman for the Boston Police Department said that all of the packages appeared to be similar.

"Our device was not an active device. We are still treating the area as a crime scene. There were no injuries. Everyone was evacuated properly, and everyone now back to their locations," Tufts New England Medical Center's Brooke Hynes said.

Mayor Tom Menino said that all of the packages found posed no danger, but the incidents remained under investigation. Storrow Drive eastbound was shut down for a brief time, and the MBTA suspended service on the Red Line and planned to bus afternoon commuters between Kendall and Park Street stations.

Earlier Wednesday, the state police bomb squad was called and detonated the package in Sullivan Square just before 10 a.m. Officials said it contained an electronic circuit board with some components that were "consistent with an improvised explosive device," but they said it had no explosives. They determined that the device was not dangerous, but destroyed it as a precaution.

"We determined that this device, in particular, was not explosive," said MBTA Lt. Sal Venturelli.

He said MBTA police were told about the package by a transit passenger who spotted it on a column that supports Interstate 93. The parcel was located on an elevated structure above the bus way and below I-93 in the Charlestown section of Boston at about 8 a.m.

"This is a perfect example of our passengers taking part in Homeland Security," Venturelli said.

An investigation will be conducted into how the package got there and when, he said.

Train service on the Orange Line between Sullivan Square and Wellington stations was suspended in both directions. No injuries were reported.

The northbound side of I-93 was closed, causing significant traffic backups. Motorists were not allowed to access the highway near Sullivan Square coming up from the south.

Hundreds of thousands had their day thrown into a topsy turvy mess and you are being condescending. Turner and the Guerilla Marketers should be sued up the kazoo, any one who thinks this is funny is just wrong.

Lunatic Fringe nailed it: confusion and overreaction.

I've got even less respect for Mumbles and "Together We Can" than I have for Turner. So, heh, I'd rather blame them for the mess. Which, by the way, I would have been caught in, if a meeting hadn't been rescheduled.

Clayton Lee Waagner ~ remember that name well.

He got prosecuted and convicted for sending out phoney anthrax attack letters.

At the same time he was commiting his crime personnel at Planned Parenthood headquarters had prepared mailings in the hundreds of thousands of pieces threatening pretty much the same thing.

Although their phoney anthrax attack letters went to many more people than did Waagner's, they were not prosecuted.

If you or I were to place similar "hoax boxes" around Boston, we'd never get out of prison. Odds are very good that the US Attorney General will find no reason whatsoever to prosecute Ted Turner!

Frankly, I think we should make it our mission to take this miscreant and stick him in a cell next to Mr. Waagner!

Whoa, your right. This thing just screams death and destruction on a mass scale!!!

My mistake, they're not AA's. They're the much more deadly C's or D's. Can't tell for sure.

You are spot on correct.

Increasingly, Americans (sadly including many Freepers) are inclined to shriek "terrorism" or at the least "dry run" when they see anything out of the ordinary, anything that is not part of their "routine".

This inability to cope with non-routine events is of course a symptom they share with autistic children.

"Get a job."
You betcha! Oh, wait, I am currently posting from work.

I agree with you 100%! Because there is a set of a certain group of people who would like to cause me grievous bodily harm, I should hope that people all go screaming to the authorities when they see a device they don't recognize.

And when those devices turn out to be entirely harmless, I should hope that people go to jail, for scaring me, because I am an American 'fraidy cat, who has let the terrorists win.

See, the thing is, you are afraid of getting your head cut off by people who are muslim. I am not. There are so many things in this world to die of that terrorism rates really low in the total deathcount of humanity.

The terrorists have scared you so much that you think all muslims want to cut off your head. Therefore, the terrorists have won.

The terrorists have scared you so much that you think leaving a bit of plastic somewhere is a crime that should be punished. You are a 'fraidy-cat, and the terrorists have won.

This is really seditious..

BWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

said the devices were part of an outdoor marketing campaign in 10 American cities for an animated television show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" produced by its Adult Swim brand.

They had been in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Austin, San Francisco, and Philadelphia.

So an advertising campaign that was in place in 9 other major cities for three weeks is seditious. You know you're right. A good 'conservative' would do two things

1) Require all outdoor advertising meet standards set by Homeland Security. Screw ingenuity and free speech, we want to be 'safe'.
2) Chastise the millions of people in the 9 other cities that used their common sense and didn't run to the police like a chicken with their head cut off. Dern 'libruls'. How dare they?!? Thinking on their own and not trusting the government.....

Of course the next ridiculous argument is that this is somehow comparable to yelling fire in a theater. Except that won't apply for several reasons. It was not meant to incite anyone and Turner Broadcasting didn't take into account the stupidity of some, not all, Bostonians....

They're not "hoaxes" and they're not even "boxes".

Sheesh people. I detest Ted Turner more than most, but at least have a legitimate gripe about him. There's plenty to choose from.

If I send a letter to someone and write "Anthrax" on the envelope, I have taken action to explicitly threaten that person's life.

If I put an electric light depicting a cartoon character on a sidewalk, the "threat" is generated entirely within the fervid imagination of the terrorized.

Do you at all see the difference??

Perhaps look at it and use the brain that God gave me. But that's just me.

Of course it's handy that people who plant bombs always make them look like bombs and never think of making them look like something else. Lucky us. We can just look at it and tell.

What does your "seniority" on FR get you anyway?

Seniority on FR is generally of significance only when it is very low (a day or two), in which case it be an indicator of a DU jerk who has created an account in order to perpetrate a quick troll.

Why bother trying to reason? The level of ignorance from the true patriots on the forum is breathtaking. I wish these folks would use their noggins once in a while. A bare circuit board does not automatically equal a bomb.

See post 523. Tell me that can in anyway be a bomb in disguise.

We're not talking about "anything" were talking about these LED boards.

Do you call 911 every time you see something that doesn't look like a bomb, assuming it's a bomb in camouflage?

You didn't just get off the turnip truck did you?

NO ONE writes "Anthrax" on the cover ~ they let you open the letter and then you learn about it.

Letters, in and of themselves, are hardly threatening. We all get them every day.

Now, when it comes to strange looking boxes with batteries and wires just abandoned on the street, you will notice that we are frequently warned about such things ~ particularly if they have "wires" and "batteries".

Try a google.com search for packages wires batteries threat

How do you know what one of these looked like dangling high up on a bridge? Were you there? Do you know how many feet from the ground they were hanging? I see what looks like transistors, wires and batteries. I have no idea what it's supposed to be. That it was a campaign ad for some stupid adult cartoon never would have entered my mind, nor the mind of most adults who don't watch crappy cartoons on TV. I spent 23 years dealing with security. Overreacting isn't part of my personality, but I learned through experience that you can't assume anything, and to question everything. It's called better to be safe than sorry. Maybe if the a-holes at Turner had chosen to put a sign with the name of the program up at places other than bridges and subways...both of which are known to be potential targets to terrorists, they could have saved themselves and the people of Boston a whole lot of problems. What ever happened to dressing people up in costumes and having them hand out advertisements?

These things were in place for three weeks, but were all reported on the same day?

Don't think so... something's up with that.

I don't agree with the posters that are calling this "sedition" or some other thing. But I wouldn't have a problem with a little jail time for hoaxing a city with abandoned bags and packages. False alarms will happen but when they're intentional it is, and should be a crime.

people who plant bombs always make them look like bombs and never think of making them look like something else

By that logic, everything you see on a ten minute walk through town..... a discarded tire, a bulging garbage can, a pile of dog crap ... is a potential bomb.

How then can I safely leave my house??
