Biden Camp Dismisses 'Clean' Remark

By JAKE TAPPER

January 31, 2007— Senator Joe Biden, D-Dela., the loquacious chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee who launched his presidential campaign on Wednesday may be experiencing an ailment not entirely unknown to him: foot in mouth disease.

Instead of media attention for his experience or expertise on Iraq, Biden is today taking some heat for comments he made to the New York Observer, in which he says of a rival for the nomination Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.: "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," Biden told the newspaper. "I mean, that's a storybook, man."

Immediately the conservative media establishment - Rush Limbaugh, the Drudge Report, bloggers - publically pounced. At Townhall.com, Mary Katherine Ham wrote: "A clean black man? The first black guy on the American political scene who can both shower regularly and speak properly? Is that really what Biden thinks? If a Republican had said this, we'd have a national outpouring of grief over the residual ignorance and racial insensitivity in our country, and the guy would be in sensitivity training until around about the time John Kerry is elected president."

Obama Responds

And notably, Obama himself didn't do much to knock the story down. Asked about the comments at a press conference this afternoon, Obama said "You'd have to ask Senator Clinton, uh, Senator Biden what he was thinking," initially stumbling by mentioning the name of the Democratic frontrunner for the nomination, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. "I don't spend too much time worrying about what folks are talking about during a campaign season."

This will probably knock him out before the ink has even dried on his Campaign's new HQ lease, but I'm not so sure that's a good thing. Would not the Republicans have profited quite a bit from having him out there hammering Clinton & Obama every day on their utter lack of policy substance and absurd naivete w/respect to Iraq? I'm looking for the Dems to start screeching the loudest about taking him out.

"Joe Biden's Macaca moment."

Its not what's said but who is reporting it. Re Biden: The media is snoozing--there will be no fall out.

Biden is an amazingly stupid man, even for a RAT. I'm suprised he didn't refer to obama as "colored".

...expertise on Iraq

Hahaha....expertise on plagiarism maybe. He's obviously not to expert on that either, since he always gets caught.

That's what I'm saying. I doubt him uttering "Sen. Clinton" was a mistake at all.

Obama said "You'd have to ask Senator Clinton, uh, Senator Biden what he was thinking,"

If that's intentional, that's funny.

As much as I despise Barack Hussein, that was funny. It was the perfect response.

In penny Lane there is a Biden with an hourglass
And in his pocket is a portrait of the Queen.
He likes to keep his fire engine clean,
It's a clean machine.

Yep, Joe sure keeps a "clean machine."

"Immediately the conservative media establishment - Rush Limbaugh, the Drudge Report, bloggers - publically pounced."

Notice how ABC tries to neutralize and minimize this by making it seem like only partisan conservatives could find fault with Biden's remarks. Notice also how the list of the "conservative media establishment" contains only two names before it drops down to "bloggers." Two people comprise an "establishment"?

This is how the AP is glossing this and sending it to their usual outlets. This was from the Atlanta rag:

He acknowledged that that even he was excited by the prospect of a charismatic black candidate and serious woman candidate vying for the nomination

So Biden slams Obama in his unique Bidensque style,
Then Obama uses his response to needle Hillary.

Time to stock up on beer and popcorn, this could be worth watching.

"Biden Camp Dismisses 'Clean' Remark"

'Biden Camp'? I thought Babbling Biden was the only little fellow in the country who thought Biden should be president.
