I thought that the picture of the essay authoer accompanying the piece was interesting and telling for the Times. As far as they're concerned, he's both isolated and in a corner.
They never can be accused of subtlety, can they?

While I think the underlying essay is silly, the NYT will never be accused of missing an opportunity when it comes to castigating the right, subtle or not.
