Hutchison opens door to No. 2 spot on ticket
The Washington Times ^ | January 30, 2007 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 01/30/2007 2:06:16 PM PST by YCTHouston

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, the largest Republican vote-getter in the 2006 congressional elections and the most popular Republican in Texas, said yesterday she would consider an offer to run for vice president next year. "If our party's nominee called me and said we are putting everything in the grid, and we think you are the best person, would I say no? I can't imagine that I would say no," she said. "Would I seek it or do something to promote it? Absolutely not," she told editors and reporters of The Washington Times at a meeting at the newspaper.

--------------------------------------

She did not dispute, however, that she is widely discussed for top offices, including the vice presidency, in part because she is the most conservative and longest-tenured female Republican senator.

An opponent of partial-birth abortion and proponent of parental notification, she has a zero rating from the pro-choice NARAL and a 90 percent rating from the anti-tax Americans for Tax Reform. Her American Conservative Union 91 percent lifetime voting record puts her ahead of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Utah Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, with 90 each. Mrs. Hutchison, the lead sponsor of a bill in 2005 to repeal the gun-ownership ban in the nation's capital, said she would reintroduce the legislation this year.

If you read the full article, it explains her position on Iraq a little more. It's a postion I tend to agree with, for what little that's worth.

She pretty much rubber-stamps what the corporate lobbyists tell her to vote for or against.

Just like her fellow Texan in the White House...and any other politician with hopes of rising to higher office. That's the way the game is played.

They pick certain votes, particularly during an election year for that member, that they really think will either boost or hurt whoever the target is. Given what they pick for incumbents they like at ACU, a 91 is barely minimally passing for a conservative. The issues are no-brainers for conservatives. For her not to make a 100 on this weighted test says volumes.

What BS! Have you ever read the votes they grade? One year she was way down for defending against base closings in Texas. ANY Senator will resist that in their home state.

KBH is a dim bulb and an open borders one at that. There is no there, there. All she has is the strong will and drive to become a US Senator. In no way is she capable

"All she has is the strong will and drive to become a US Senator. In no way is she capable"

Should I bother pointing out the bad logic there? Getting elected is a sorta important part of the deal. People without the strong will and drive and work ethic to get elected have no place in higher office. They're called judges.

I remember a NARAL spokesobject saying that KBH was not really a woman because she would not follow the NARAL agenda. Typical hateful attitude of the left.

Maybe somewhere in all these names being tossed around, Jeff Sessions will be looked at VERY CLOSELY.

Ya'll want someone from the South? Someone who is a leader in the fight against illegal immigration? Someone who is strong on Homeland Security and the war in Iraq?

Sessions is our man...

Sessions is a good guy. Something in my gut makes me think it will be a while before a southerner (but especially a Texan) makes it to the White House.

I do know where of I speak.

And yet you cannot provide examples of her being "fine on WOT agenda items . . . [b]ut on domestic policy, she's shaky as hell," apart from your unsubstantiated opinion. The ACU ratings, granted, are simply a tool . . . but one does not score 91 over time without being allowed a (rebuttable) presumption of being "Conservative."

You focus on methodology. Are there any Conservatives that should score higher but do not? Are there any Liberals that should score lower but do not? If so, what are your criteria? Are your criteria not vulnerable to the same accusation you yourself make?

Unless you can demonstrate some or all of the above, including providing some evidence of why you think Sen. Hutchison's rating is over-stated, then yes, you are blowing smoke.

I'll tell you and everyone else on FR, from the editorials she has had in our community paper and elsewhere, she is much more competent than Perry ever thought of being on the border issue.

Many people just thought it was horrible when she adopted those kids at her age, but that hasn't hurt her in the least. There was an article in the Austin paper about her and the left was outraged by the fact that she adopted kids instead of having her own. She wrote a letter to the editor that was printed as a short editorial explaining why she and her husband took that route.

Sometimes integrity and credibility makes a person of her character the target for the DBM. She is EXTREMELY disliked by the "treehuggers" in Austin to say the least. She also takes a stronger stance on the border issue than Perry, but not as strong as Senator Cornyn. I could support him as the #1 spot on the Republican ticket with no problem.

You are missing my point entirely. Is every vote cast in the US Senate being scored?

No.

They pick and choose votes to score.

How do you think they pick and choose those votes to score?

And I might add, it is not only a communications tool to the outside world, it is a lobbying tool. They will send emails up to the Hill -- as all the groups do -- telling members that they will be scoring certain votes.

My opinion is far from unsubstantiated. These are the tools of Washington insiders. I am sorry you do not know that. I'm sure you think letters to you from Senators are personally signed by them too.

Out of the THOUSANDS of votes cast in a given legislative session, hand picking 30-50 votes does not always give a clear picture -- do you see what I am saying here?

Most male Texans have a deep respect for strong women. Were you aware that it was Texas that elected the first woman Governor in the US dating back to 1923. She ended up being a twice elected Governor. Texas also elected another woman Governor but I simply refuse to mention her name.

"Conservative stands like her unwavering support for McCain-Feingold?

You got a strange definition of "conservative," sport.

God help us if that dimwit were ever in the White House.
Second in line would be almost as bad.
