When relying on Julia Grant's memoirs one has to remember that they were no published until about 70 years after her death. They are open to some question.

Exactly. She may have freed them afterwards.

You haven't been able to answer the one question I've been posing all along. Where did Julia Grant live where it was legal for her to own slaves as late as December 1865?
