As a former (white) member of the UCC, I can speak from real experience. There are many wonderful issues about the UCC congregational churches as well as some negatives.
The biggest positive is the organization allows all individuals to join in the celebration of being a Christian. Just as Christ would not turn anyone away, nor does the organizational principles of the UCC.
Yet, the UCC allows for home rule. Meaning that each congregation can adopt its own view and direction. This does lead to varying approaches. So do I like all of the items listed by Trinity UCC in Chicago - no. However, I believe they are attempting to reach the community they serve with a message that will draw non-church going individuals back to church.

From what I have read - this “church” differs from the actual UCC. These people seem to have an allegiance to Africa - not America. They have the “non-negotiable COMMITMENT TO AFRICA” but not a single place do they mention their commitment to America.
I don’t believe they have any attempt to “reach the community they serve with a message that will draw non-church going individuals back to church” as you put it - they won’t even answer a simple email sent to them giving them a chance to try and defend an email that I received. They don’t even mention Jesus on their web site. Of course, now you can’t verify that as they have removed their web site from the www.
Where is the pride in that? I am a Christian and an American, and this type of thing just scares me. What is he going to do for America and is he going to do it before or AFTER his commitment to Africa is fulfilled?
