That's also a good point, but one I never heard offered in defense of the "don't dump this on us" attitude that Trent Lott personified.
However, had the Senate done their duty, I think a Gore presidency would have been under the microscope (especially given his own ethical/legal breaches) and wouldn't have been able to do much damage (nor get re-elected). Unfortunately, we've seen way too many dire consequences resulting from leaving Clinton in office (and appearing victorious over evil Republicans).
I'm not gonna defend Trent Lott... And you make a good point otherwise as well.
