An assemblywoman in the district said, why should the towers be disguised as a tree. The towers should look like towers to show folks that they are secure because their CELL PHONES WILL WORK!

"The objections to these cell towers are purely visual," Little said. "There is no real harm to the environment."

"Shame on those that would get in the way of human life," said state Sen. Martin J. Golden, R-Brooklyn, who added the towers could be easily concealed. "To lose a life for something as simple as not having a cell phone tower ... is very telling about priorities."

He said he plans to back Little and Sayward's push for towers.

Little is considering proposing a law that would stop governmental agencies, like the APA and municipalities, from prohibiting the construction of cell towers on interstate highways.

I keep a mylar survival blanket and mre's in my truck and I live in NC

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Smart man, you don't say what part but there are areas in NC where a person could die of hypothermia in the SUMMER!
Even in South Carolina people have died of exposure, below freezing is below freezing regardless of latitude. It doesn't pay to be overconfident.

You miss the point entirely - all they needed to be saved was a couple of lousy cell phone towers denied by the self-serving enviro-nazis

Excuse me. You miss the point.

Don't ever trust your very life to the idea that someone can come and save you. Even if there were cell phone towers where they needed to be, cell phones can malfunction. Batteries can go dead.

Keep yourself alive and don't depend on others to do it for you.

So I guess if you get hurt in your home and call 911, you have no reasonable expectation that the ambulance and or EMT's will arrive.

Guess you'll just have to drag yer busted carcass down to Dr McClintock all by yerself, there bucko.

Good grief...

Fine. Drive in dangerously cold winter weather with no preparation but your cell phone.

You win. Happy?

Even if you have supplies in the car (which I do), what if you're pinned and can't reach them? Or worse yet, you get picked up by Kathy Bates in Misery?

If that is a known trouble road, why is there no service?

I see there are two sides to the issue.

Look at it this way, though ...

If one person reads this thread and puts a kit in their car, it was worth talking about.

I agree. It's good to be prepared. However, the woman was wearing a warm coat, had a blanket wrapped around her, and was PINNED. If her cell phone worked, her husband would not have died, but the Evirowhackos would not allow high towers.

"On Saturday, she said, "enough is enough."

"This is such a tragedy, but the bigger tragedy would be that it happens again," Little said.

Langner's wife, Barbara P. Langner, 59, also of Brooklyn, was in stable condition at Fletcher Allen Health Center in Burlington, Vt., as of 6 p.m. Saturday, according to a hospital official.

She was brought there with cold-related and lower-back injuries, State Police said.

The couple was driving south in a 1989 Lincoln Town Car sometime between 1 and 2 a.m. Thursday morning about a mile north of Exit 30, when their car went off the road, hit a culvert and became airborne, State Police said.

The car landed in a grove of pine trees that hid it from view.

Barbara Langner said her husband moved to the car's back seat to try to get out, State Police said.

She said the last time he moved or spoke to her was at about 3 p.m. Thursday, more than 12 hours after it's believed they became trapped, said State Police Major Richard Smith.

"It's just an outrage," said state Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward, R-Willsboro, who has also supported the construction of cell towers on the Northway. "This should not have happened. No one should have to lose their life to bring attention to a situation that we have talked about for years."

The Northway has had call boxes since the 1970s, Little said.

"An interstate highway from Montreal to New York ... should have cell coverage," Little said. "I'm glad the call boxes were working, but in this case, there was a call box two-tenths of a mile from the car."

Cell towers were considered in 2000, when the call box system broke down, Little said.

Environmental groups and the APA opposed large towers, but agreed to 32 towers, each 8 feet tall, with 4-foot antennas, along the northern section of the Northway, Little said.

Major cell phone providers declined to run their services from the shorter towers, because they said the towers were too small for their service to work. So the state replaced the old call boxes with new ones, Little said.

The state is now working on a plan to install three 100-foot cell towers in rest areas along the Northway and four 75-foot cell repeater towers between exits 28 and 34, Little said.

Sayward said she wants temporary cell towers rolled into place along the Northway as soon as possible.

Call boxes are relics of the last century.

When conditions are that bad, best to have someone checking on your whereabouts.

ALWAYS pack some blankets when traveling in cold weather.
ALWAYS pack extra drinks when traveling in hot weather.
Basic rules to live by.

There was a guy in Germany stranded in the snow but had a case of beer with him that he drank to keep nourished. Lots of posts on calories of heat versus calories needed to heat the beer form freezing to body temp.

Verizon Wireless Spokesperson John O'Malley said, "This is an issue we've been working on for years. The proposed towers are too small to provide adequate coverage to all areas. The towers would just cover the Northway."

O'Malley also said Verizon Wireless is moving forward with a proposed plan that would install 15 cell towers, varying in size to provide seamless coverage along this part of the Northway. The only holdup could be the APA if the cell towers are over 100 feet.

The AFA does not want the towers over 100. THAT is the problem.

Emergency responders say it's especially important to be prepared when driving long distances this time of year.
Kilburn said, "It's good to have an emergency kit in your car if you do break down in inclement weather, snow conditions. You should have some extra clothes or extra blankets."

Glens Falls Fire Chief Ronald Cote said, "If it's below 20 degrees out, wear warm clothing in case you do have an accident."

Aside from the more obvious things like carrying extra blankets, water and a flashlight in your car, the experts say there are a few other things to consider bringing with you in case you're ever faced with an emergency.
Kilburn said, "You should have some flares, or even better one of those air horns. They're very loud. Anything to attract attention if you're injured or off the road."
Unfortunately, the couple who went off the road in North Hudson couldn't even get out of the car. If this happens, there are a few things you can try.

Cote said, "Conserving your fuel, bringing the car up to temperature and shutting it off, waiting awhile until it gets cold to turn it back on. Of course, the car has to be able to be run and run safely."
