24 creator, Joel Surnow, is producing what he calls "A Daily Show for conservatives. Naturally liberals wont admit The Daily Show is Left-leaning, but they dont admit anythings Left-leaning. These are the same people who think CNNs too pro-American. Anyway, The Hot Little Number I Call Mrs. Harry and I were lucky enough to score some seats to watch the taping and had a terrific time. It was our first ever look at the live taping of a TV show and we found it to be a fascinating experience.
The Half Hour News Hour is actually nothing like The Daily Show because The Half Hour News Hour is actually funny. The two stars, Kurt Long and Susan Yeagley, displayed none of Jon Stewarts smug self-satisfied mugging or Colberts tiresome ironic self-awareness. Instead, theyre both charming performers with a strong chemistry who blend seriousness and absurdity in the same way SNL did in the heyday of its Weekend Update series.
Im not going to review the show here. It was shot out of order and the few dud jokes will hopefully be edited out, and how it will all come together is anyones guess. But as a series of sketches, most were laugh-out-loud funny and brutally clever skewering environmentalism, political correctness, the ACLU, and many other liberal sacred cows.
Its nice to finally have a powerful, outspoken producer on our side. Im encouraged by what I saw Saturday and think Surnow understands theres an audience out there largely ignored and ready to become a cash cow with more smart programming. Like I said, I cant recommend a show before its put together, but I strongly recommend you give it a chance. Some of the jokes were timely, so I expect it will air soon.
I'll watch it after Battlestar Galactica.
I thought the true genius sketch was the celebrity bimbo in search of humanitarian causes. The ACLU bits were great too.
FYI, I was Googling "The Half Hour News Hour" in an effort to find an updated schedule (I thought it was supposed to be every Sunday, but I don't think that it aired last week....still looking for a current schedule) and this FR thread was one of the first few hits, right after a Wikipedia listing!
I've come across FR threads a few times before when doing Google searches, but it's always nice to see :-)
Rush Limbaugh announced that Fox News picked up 16 or 18 shows. Other than that I don't have any other details.
I appreciate your info and reply, thank you very much :-)
