Lieberman considers backing GOP presidential candidate in 2008

HARTFORD, Conn. - Senator Joe Lieberman said Sunday he may vote Republican in next year’s presidential campaign, possibly widening a divide between him and Democrats he once represented as the party’s vice presidential nominee.

Lieberman, who was elected last November as an Independent after losing the Democratic nomination to Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont, said he will consider all presidential candidates regardless of party.

Asked if he might vote Republican in 2008, Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, said, “I am, because we have so much on the line both in terms of the Islamist terrorists, who are an enemy as brutal as the fascists and communists we faced in the last century, and we have great challenges here at home to make our economy continue to produce good jobs, to deal with our crises in health care, education, immigration, energy.

“Party is important, but more important is the national interest,” he said on “Fox News Sunday.”

He said he will “look at all the candidates and then in the end, regardless of party, decide who I think will be best for the future of our country.”

“I agree more often than not with Democrats on domestic policy,” Lieberman said. “I agree more often than not with Republicans on foreign and defense policy. I’m an Independent.”

“So I’m open to supporting a Democrat, Republican or even an Independent, if there’s a strong one,” Lieberman said. “Stay tuned.”

A call to a spokesman for Lieberman was not immediately returned.

He's just showing the Dems the same amount of loyalty they showed him.

As posted many times before, Liberman's voting record is envied by Barbara Boxer. He is an ulta-liberal on social issues. Only on Foreign policy is he a conservative and especially Middle East areas of interest.

He could run on a ticket as VP with Rudy.

I guarantee you if it comes down to a Hillary nomination, he'll vote Republican for sure.

Blow that off. It's too soon for such blather.
If you're serious, though, Joe, voting GOP from your senate seat until then it's what's called for.

It'll be huge if Lieberman endorses the GOP candidate. It'll be a significant boost in a lot of swing states.

To be honest with you, if McCain is the Republican Candidate for President, and he runs against Lieberman, I would probably vote for Joe.

But there's no way that the Democrats will ever nominate someone as rational as Liebernman.

That's a recipe for seriously big government!

It may be a warning shot to the Left that he won't sit still for them undermining the US in Iraq. He could switch parties and give the Senate to the Republicans. Of course, Hagel is concerned that we may succeed, so he might become a Democrat to assure we lose in Iraq.

I can't figure out what Democrat he would vote for if he puts FP ahead of DP. I mean, maybe someone like Evan Bahy, but he's already dropped out.

I guess he might vote D if we put up a cut-and-run idiot like Chuck Hagel or Ron Paul, but there's about as good of a chance of that as there is the D's putting up a candidate who's serious about the WOT.

You are right that he's very liberal on DP, at least recently (he use to be in favor of private accounts and school choice...then Al Gore got a hold of him, and now nobody knows), but his FP cred is second to none, R or D.

He's being loyal to his beliefs about the enemy and that we cannot let the enemies of America succeed. The Democrats are being loyal to their belief in Bush Derangement Syndrome. The two beliefs are irreconcilable.
