Giuliani touts experience, but personal life may be an issue

BY CRAIG GORDON
Newsday Washington Bureau

January 28, 2007

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Rudolph Giuliani argued yesterday that his record of cutting taxes, improving security and guiding New York through 9/11 are proof that he could do the same as president - offering his strongest signal yet that he's serious about a White House bid.

[...snip]

Giuliani is trying to bat down questions from top Republicans about whether his White House ambitions are a popularity-fueled dalliance or something more serious. His speech laid out a point-by-point rationale for his possible candidacy, seeking to portray himself as a tested leader for dangerous times in the mold of Ronald Reagan.

[...snip]

He also appeared intent on quieting questions about his marital history by giving wife Judith Nathan an unusually high-profile role here. She barely left his side in public, and he called her a "partner" whom he leaned on for everything from getting through 9/11 and prostate cancer to understanding the science behind possible anthrax attacks.

Giuliani didn't mention that when Nathan helped him after his cancer diagnosis in spring 2000, he was, in fact, still married to Donna Hanover, and that the revelation of his illness came amid the messy public breakup of his second marriage.

In the end, Giuliani's two-day visit here encapsulated the promise and challenge of his possible candidacy.

On one hand, his name recognition and tough-guy image in New York, before and after 9/11, helped him draw large and enthusiastic crowds on this visit. But even some who were eager to see him were blunt in saying his personal history and liberal social stances could prove a serious, perhaps insurmountable obstacle to winning their votes.

Donna Ann Kofnovec (aka Donna Hanover, aka Donna Giuliani, aka Donna Hanover Giuliani).

Somone should ask Ms. Kofnovec about how she treated her first husband and why he divorced her.

Rudy is the front runner right now.

Why hasn't anyone else come forward to change that?

I for one cannot understand why there is no "true conservative" candidate and why is he not running away with this thing?

We are in the middle of fighting the biggest threat to our Republic since WWII and there isn't one person who has come forward that is a viable candidate and meets your specifications.

Who will be your Great Right Hope?

What the hell is taking so long?

Maybe people like you should stop worrying about Rudy and start worrying about who is going to stop the Psycho Whore from becoming President in '08.

Duncan Hunter is, assuming we conservatives have enough left in us to stop accepting table scraps and rise up and demand it.

Great Choice by My G on his wives? He is either unlucky or stupid. 2nd Cousin?? Nothing can top that.

I am sure that Ms. Kofnovec is a piece of work, but Mr. G is a bigger baffoon for putting a ring on this women.

Donna Hanover maiden name is "Kofnovec".

Hanover is the name she adopted from her first husband Stanley Hanover.

Whaddya mean demand it? Hunter's gonna have to win it. It he can't beat the "cut and run" Democrats in 2008, we need someone who can. We owe that to the troops.

If Giuliani's the best we've got, what do we do? It it's enough to bash they guy(s) who aim to run. We've got to have viable alternatives or stand by the best we've got until we get someone better.

There's about 10 Republicans running for President. Most of them are not Giuliani, Romney or McCain. Pick one of the good ones and support him.

You know another thing great about Hunter? Loyalty.

If he doesn't get the GOP nomination, he will not jump ship. He will remain in the Republican Party, and support the candidate.

Will your lovefest with Hunter continue then?

OK if it's Duncan Hunter, so be it.

He has to prove to me that he is viable and so far about 10 people outside of this website even know who he is.

So far, he is not doing the job.

So far, the pathetic left wingers have their shiite together and we don't.

I will never support someone who I don't think can prevent the left wing scum from winning in '08.

Time to get our proverbial shiite together, isn't it?

When was the last time a House member was elected President?

And it looks like Duncan Hunter doesn't have any legislative accomplishments to speak of.

Duncan Hunter is a lot of talk, but not much more.

Of all the books in the Reagan Library, there is only one that isn't devoted to Reagan or presidential ships and planes. And that book is Giuliani's book on leadership.

Giuliani worked as the #3 man in the Reagan Justice Department and Reagan greatly admired Rudy.

Giuliani received the Medal of Freedom from Ronald Reagan.

As he is a conservative, I will continue to support him regardless of his party affiliation.

The question is will you oppose liberals, regardless of theirs?

Rudolph Giuliani argued yesterday that his record of cutting taxes, improving security...

Snerdley, stop the tape... (in Limbaugh voice)

No evacuation plan after the first attack on the World Trade Center?

The primary emergency response protocol of "isolate and deny entry" was not followed. It lead to hundreds of needless deaths. Leadership my eye.

The Pentagon followed the protocol. So did the Murrah federal building response team in Oklahoma City.

(I do have the professional certifications as an incident commander in first responder situations.)

I'd support the Jeb Bush/John Cornyn ticket, but it doesn't seem to be an option this cycle.

I said it on another thread, and I'll somewhat paraphrase it again here.

Republicans are almostly surely going to have to choose between Guiliani and McCain.

Folks like Hunter, Paul, Tancredo, Brownback, and the rest are going nowhere fast. At best, those guys will each have their supporters at this forum who can throw mud at each other for entertainment purposes, but that's about it. They'll have about as much impact on the 2008 race as Dennis Kucinich did in 2004.

When is the last time someone who never held any elected office other than mayor was elected president?

"That's illogical, Jim. If you support an unelectable conservative, why aren't you responsible for helping the 'cut and run' democrats get elected in 2008."

I think many might argue that being mayor of New York City is at least the equivalent of being a governor of some of the smaller states.
