Giuliani touts experience, but personal life may be an issue

BY CRAIG GORDON
Newsday Washington Bureau

January 28, 2007

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Rudolph Giuliani argued yesterday that his record of cutting taxes, improving security and guiding New York through 9/11 are proof that he could do the same as president - offering his strongest signal yet that he's serious about a White House bid.

[...snip]

Giuliani is trying to bat down questions from top Republicans about whether his White House ambitions are a popularity-fueled dalliance or something more serious. His speech laid out a point-by-point rationale for his possible candidacy, seeking to portray himself as a tested leader for dangerous times in the mold of Ronald Reagan.

[...snip]

He also appeared intent on quieting questions about his marital history by giving wife Judith Nathan an unusually high-profile role here. She barely left his side in public, and he called her a "partner" whom he leaned on for everything from getting through 9/11 and prostate cancer to understanding the science behind possible anthrax attacks.

Giuliani didn't mention that when Nathan helped him after his cancer diagnosis in spring 2000, he was, in fact, still married to Donna Hanover, and that the revelation of his illness came amid the messy public breakup of his second marriage.

In the end, Giuliani's two-day visit here encapsulated the promise and challenge of his possible candidacy.

On one hand, his name recognition and tough-guy image in New York, before and after 9/11, helped him draw large and enthusiastic crowds on this visit. But even some who were eager to see him were blunt in saying his personal history and liberal social stances could prove a serious, perhaps insurmountable obstacle to winning their votes.

Anyone with an ounce of sense (except maybe your other hysterical friends) can see that two newspaper articles have gotten the name of the honor that Rudy received wrong.

YOU ... DID ... NOT ... LINK ... TO ... ANY ... NEWSPAPER ... ARTICLE ... IN ... POST #73.

Hon, I was quoting the newpaper article (which is why I put in parenthesis that the newspaper called it that name). Every time you post, I lower your age. We're down to about 12 now.

GOOD ... NIGHT ... MISS ... MAPES.

Delphinium says: A "purist" Christian would not say that abortion up the the nineth month is murder. That is just plain mean and hateful.

First of all, I don't know what a "purist" Christian is. And, I really don't care to know. It's some kind of new terminology, coined no doubt by someone I have little in common with.

Secondly, a baby is quite capable of being delivered to fresh air, surviving and thriving much earlier than the ninth month.

When an innocent and defenseless human life is killed at the hands of another human, what else can it be called?

But, murder.

I was making fun of some on FR that keep calling anyone who opposes phoneys or pro-abortion candidates "purists", etc.

That's why conservatives lose elections. A certain segment has a laundry list of "deal breakers" and unless the eventual nominee passes the "deal breaker" test, they'll stay at home or cast some pathetic protest vote.

Instead of getting 90% of the pie, or even a third of a pie, they'll get 0% of the pie and think they've done a good thing for the country. As long as we have our guns, they will be afraid of the citizens!

It's madness, but it's getting routine.

I disagree. The reason we lose elections is because of the RINOS in the GOP who vote as liberals. Actually, they are liberals and should just join the Democrat party so they wouldn't have to be hypocrites again. I'm tired of voting for "the lessor of two evils." My vote is no longer for sale. When we elect RINOS, we get exactly what we voted for, and since Rudy and McCain are both anti gun, they will NEVER get my vote!

We'll just have to disagree, then. And why did you add this line to your quote of my post?
As long as we have our guns, they will be afraid of the citizens!
I'm not sure I disagree with that statement, but it wasn't something I said.

Oh. OK. Sometimes I don't pick up on subtleties of sarcasm.
Peace to you Brother/Sister.

The reason I added it is because it was on the post of mine that you originally posted to. McCain and Rudy are both VERY anti gun. THAT, in itself, is reason enough not to vote for them.

So what does this have to do with fighting terrorists?

That's not the president's only job. We can have a GOP president who'll be good on national security without selling out our culture to the barbarians. If our culture goes down the tubes to the homo-pervs and abortion industry (even more than it already has), that's a defeat as much losing our culture to the Muslims.

Everybody knows his personal history and nobody cares.

Who is this "nobody" who doesn't care? We'll find out if his history of flagrant adultery doesn't matter to GOP primary voters. I wouldn't be surprised if it does matter to enough of them that Rudy will still be working in the security business (along with his "partner" Kerik) come 2009.

Liz, your judgment of political and cultural leaders is spot-on. You don't weigh in much (at least I don't see you posting all that much), but when you do, you're incisive and knowing.

If our culture goes down the tubes to the homo-pervs and abortion industry (even more than it already has), that's a defeat as much losing our culture to the Muslims.

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God.

We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthen us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.

Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us! It behooves us, then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.
- Abraham Lincoln, Father of the Republican Party

You're not posting the full chart. You may want to copy it again. It's messing up at the bottom and cutting off some of the chart.
