Giuliani touts experience, but personal life may be an issue

BY CRAIG GORDON
Newsday Washington Bureau

January 28, 2007

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Rudolph Giuliani argued yesterday that his record of cutting taxes, improving security and guiding New York through 9/11 are proof that he could do the same as president - offering his strongest signal yet that he's serious about a White House bid.

[...snip]

Giuliani is trying to bat down questions from top Republicans about whether his White House ambitions are a popularity-fueled dalliance or something more serious. His speech laid out a point-by-point rationale for his possible candidacy, seeking to portray himself as a tested leader for dangerous times in the mold of Ronald Reagan.

[...snip]

He also appeared intent on quieting questions about his marital history by giving wife Judith Nathan an unusually high-profile role here. She barely left his side in public, and he called her a "partner" whom he leaned on for everything from getting through 9/11 and prostate cancer to understanding the science behind possible anthrax attacks.

Giuliani didn't mention that when Nathan helped him after his cancer diagnosis in spring 2000, he was, in fact, still married to Donna Hanover, and that the revelation of his illness came amid the messy public breakup of his second marriage.

In the end, Giuliani's two-day visit here encapsulated the promise and challenge of his possible candidacy.

On one hand, his name recognition and tough-guy image in New York, before and after 9/11, helped him draw large and enthusiastic crowds on this visit. But even some who were eager to see him were blunt in saying his personal history and liberal social stances could prove a serious, perhaps insurmountable obstacle to winning their votes.

It's a long way to the nomination :-)

A lot will happen between now and then. Any other problems?

"The top four candidates for the Republican nomination can’t win. Rudy Giuliani, John McCain....

I think either one of these guys could beat Hillary. I think Hillary is toxic even to a lot of liberals. The only problem would be if conservatives did something stupid like not vote at all.

They trash Reagan when it suits their agenda, but having your book sold at the freaking museum gift shop is a major conservative coup and is indicative of Reagan's deep love and admiration.

And meanwhile, you have a poster who says Rudy got the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Reagan at one point, and then says that Rudy getting the Reagan Freedom Medal is the same thing.

This is really getting whacked. The Rudy boosters have entered the Twilight Zone, and think that's a good thing, apparently.

Which could happen if the GOP nominates Rudy or McVain.

Well, I'm in favor of calling their bluff. If what they are really about is punishing and pouting - then perhaps it's time to quit pandering to them.

It's not my fault! It's not my fault! Our guy offered them TEN PERCENT of what they want and it WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH!

But who cares - he has a BOOK AT THE REAGAN LIBRARY GIFT SHOP!

Yeah!? But I'll bet he was never awarded the Official U.S.S. Ronald Reagan Beanie Baby like I was. And I'll bet that Klutz Paper Airplane Guy's book has sold FAR more copies in the GIFT SHOP than Giuliani's scribbled on thing. Vote for Klutz Paper Airplane Guy/Spiff in 2008!

then says that Rudy getting the Reagan Freedom Medal is the same thing.

Correction:

The award is the Reagan Freedom Award. There's no "honor" and there's no "medal" in the title.

Yeah, the GOP can surely win after losing a good 40 percent of the base.

Hello? You really are the worst sort of liar. Show me where I said that the Reagan Freedom Medal and Presidential Medal of Freedom is the same thing? Post it right here, liar.

What I said was what the newspaper article said: That Rudy got the Reagan Medal of Freedom. I never said he got the presidential medal of freedom, but to a liar like you, that's a distinction without a difference.

Folks nowadays would be thrilled to see someone like Reagan in the race.

Sure. Using some of the purist's own reasoning, here are reasons why Reagan couldn't get re-elected today: divorced, married Nancy while she was pregnant, 4 tax hikes, amnesty, ran from Lebanon, etc. It's a relatively long list. Reagan was great, but he wasn't perfect and you whiners want perfect. Good luck with that.

Oh right. I called the Medal the wrong thing because that's what a newspaper called it.

Oh, and I said something about the books that, if one looked at the CHILDREN'S section, wasn't quite accurate.

Gotcha. Liar.

You have a good evening. Meanwhile I'm just smiling knowing that Rudy got an award named after Ronald Reagan and knowing it's just killing you.

That's your post. The newspaper which I linked called the Honor by the wrong name; now that a freeper has pointed that out, I'll call it by the right name.

However, I have NEVER said that Reagan Freedom Medal is the same as the Presidential Medal of Freedom. And if you think otherwise, post it here, liar.
