Giuliani touts experience, but personal life may be an issue

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Rudolph Giuliani argued yesterday that his record of cutting taxes, improving security and guiding New York through 9/11 are proof that he could do the same as president - offering his strongest signal yet that he's serious about a White House bid.

Giuliani is trying to bat down questions from top Republicans about whether his White House ambitions are a popularity-fueled dalliance or something more serious. His speech laid out a point-by-point rationale for his possible candidacy, seeking to portray himself as a tested leader for dangerous times in the mold of Ronald Reagan.

He also appeared intent on quieting questions about his marital history by giving wife Judith Nathan an unusually high-profile role here. She barely left his side in public, and he called her a "partner" whom he leaned on for everything from getting through 9/11 and prostate cancer to understanding the science behind possible anthrax attacks.
Giuliani didn't mention that when Nathan helped him after his cancer diagnosis in spring 2000, he was, in fact, still married to Donna Hanover, and that the revelation of his illness came amid the messy public breakup of his second marriage.
In the end, Giuliani's two-day visit here encapsulated the promise and challenge of his possible candidacy.
On one hand, his name recognition and tough-guy image in New York, before and after 9/11, helped him draw large and enthusiastic crowds on this visit. But even some who were eager to see him were blunt in saying his personal history and liberal social stances could prove a serious, perhaps insurmountable obstacle to winning their votes.

That said, I can't figure out why Rudy has been anointed as a national security guru. Yes, he has supported the war and the President's anti-terror efforts, but that hardly distinguishes him from millions of other ordinary citizens. He showed leadership in the aftermath of 9/11, but again, what does it mean? Is he being rewarded for not being Ray Nagin? He did his job and was steady in a crisis, so did Haley Barbour, a much preferable candidate from a conservative perspective.
I also have difficulty backing a candidate solely based on his views on Iraq and the WOT. There is a very high likelihood that the Iraq war will be a non-factor in 2008. Congressman David Vitter, no RINO by any stretch of the imagination and the ranking Republican on the House Armed Services committee, stated on Meet the Depressed this morning that the troop surge was, for practical purposes and in his mind, the last stand. If in six months the situation in Iraq has not dramatically improved, the war will be over for all intents and purposes. If that is the case the only issue in the 2008 campaign will be who will get the troops out faster, regardless of the nominee.
I know that there are other national security issues than the Iraq War, but again how has Rudy distinguished himself from any other contender on those issues?

Real executive experience comes from being a governor, not a mayor.
I know it's hard for the Rudyphiles to get understand, but most people don't vote based on "executive experience" or not. If they do, why is Hillary Clinton the favorite to win the white house in 2008? Why is Obama so popular? Kerry was just 60,000 Bush-voters in Ohio voting for him from winning. Governors usually win because they don't take real stands on anything. I doubt too many people say "I am a life-long liberal democrat, but my candidate was never anything other than a senator, guess I'm voting republican."

He's the only one, and he arguably wasn't even that as he had been appointed (back when they did it that way) as the new US Senator from Ohio prior to the GOP Convention. He hadn't taken office as Senator yet, though, but he was clearly more than your average Congressman.

First, you're not talking about the Reagan Library and the archives there. You're talking about the Reagan museum's ONLINE GIFT SHOP. Second, you're lying. There are other books that they're selling in the GIFT SHOP including one about shenanigans inside the Beltway by John McCaslin and another written by his son Michael Reagan. They even have children's books by various authors and sculptures by Paul Rossi. I guess that qualifies Rossi as a good presidential candidate in your mind. Or maybe Doug Stillinger who authored 'The Klutz Book of Paper Airplanes' that is sold right there with the Giuliani book.
Giuliani worked as the #3 man in the Reagan Justice Department and Reagan greatly admired Rudy.
Alan Keyes worked as an Assistant Secretary of State in the Reagan Administration. Reagan also appointed him to be an Ambassador to the United Nations. And Ronald Reagan greatly admired Alan. (I can channel dead presidents just as well as you can.) I guess that you're now going to be a hardcore Keyes supporter based upon these qualifications. I haven't heard if he's going to form an exploratory committee, but I can probably Google a phone number where you could call him and ask how you can lend your support. At the very least, I'm sure we'll see you posting your defense of Keyes whenever he comes under attack here just like you posted this to defend liberal Giuliani. Right?

Ronald Reagan also admired singer Pearl Bailey (still channeling here) and awarded her the Medal of Freedom in 1988. Wait, what's this!? You mean that Giuliani is NOT on the list of recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom!? There must be some mistake. Peach said clearly that "Giuliani received the Medal of Freedom from Ronald Reagan." This just can't be. Peach wouldn't lie in order to promote the MOST LIBERAL MAJOR REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE EVER in an attempt to mislead conservative FReepers into supporting him in the Primary. Now, wait. Maybe she would. I mean she did lie about the whole Giuliani's book is the only non-Reagan book in the entire Reagan library thing. Why not lie about a little thing like this?
I do notice that Giuliani received some sort of medal from the same people that run the Reagan museum gift shop that also sells his book. Maybe that's what you were talking about. Perhaps they gave him a coffee mug too with Reagan's likeness on it. Maybe this explains why they carry his book. They "awarded me" a U.S.S. Ronald Reagan Beanie Baby when I ordered a bronze Ronald Reagan bust from them once. I guess I've got your support if I decide to run for President because of the award that Ronald Reagan himself gave me - after he was dead. I keep that 'award' in my office on a shelf above my desk. I never knew that it was a qualification for running for President.

I believe the war is far and away the single biggest challenge facing our country. That said, I believe Rudy understands the nature and importance and dangers of this War. Still in this vein, Rudy has the demonstrated managerial experience and a solid track record at dealing with very difficult and heretofore intractable problems (like the mess the City was in when Rudy got it). Additionally, Rudy has demonstrated courage and a willingness to tackle dangerous problems (and win)...like the 5 families in NYC.
Bottom line however is this. I think Rudy ought to be permitted to fight it out with the rest of the candidates and may the best man win. I am a conservative but I know one thing...the Democrats don't know we are at war and they will cut and run in 2008 if they win.
They (the Democrats) MUST NOT be permitted to win in 2008. The free world depends on that.
He also appeared on the obscene Howard Stern TV show a few times. And that's not something to be dismissed as politically irrelevant either. I'm sure that the socially conservative grassroots will have nooooo problem with him associating with such filth. Gotta get the word out on that too.
