McCain calls on China to grow up

DAVOS (AFP) - US Senator and presidential hopeful John McCain said the time had come for China to justify its superpower aspirations and "step up" over issues like the North Korean nuclear crisis.

"It's time for China to step up in the world and assume their responsibilities," McCain told reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort of Davos.

"So far, some of us ... have been very disappointed in their lack of maturity," he added.

McCain, considered a frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, said allowing Pyonyang to develop nuclear weapons would likely lead to regional proliferation.

"How can the Japanese not rearm if the North Koreans continue with this?" he said. "It's in China's interest to restrain North Korea and so far there has been very little, if any, assistance in that area on the part of China."

Six-nation talks on the nuclear issue -- involving the United States, China, Japan, Russia and the two Koreas -- resumed in December after a gap of more than one year, during which Pyongyang tested its first atom bomb.

The last session made no visible progress, with North Korea sticking to its demands that the United States end sanctions against a Macau-based bank accused of laundering money for the impoverished communist regime.

Chief US envoy Christopher Hill voiced optimism after rare one-to-one talks with his North Korean counterpart Kim Kye-gwan in Berlin last week.

But McCain insisted that Beijing, which carries the most influence with the leadership in Pyongyang, needed to bring more pressure to bear.

"If China is going to be a superpower ... it has to act like a superpower," the senator said.

North Korea is too valuable a tool to scare the West with - China won't sell them out without getting something (Taiwan) in return.

RE: Red China and the U.S. allied to save the world?

Mark Steyn reports that "The Toronto Star (which is Canada’s biggest-selling newspaper and impeccably liberal) recently noted that by 2015 Muslims will make up a majority of Russia’s army." His web site explains why it's happening but basically it seems that the Muslims are the majority of fit and sober men.

Also, there's the demographics of Europe. I'm sure everyone has heard that the next nuclear Muslim country after Iran will be France, for example.

So contrary to what I've believed since a wee boy we just might partner with Red China rather than war with 'em. The next really big WW just might be the U.S., Red China, and some other countries against a Muslim Russian federation and the Muslim parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Africa and South America?

Of course Red China has its own demographics problem as reported in a recent post, I believe. A rapidly aging population and a shortage of women due to the one-child policy. I've read that women are being kidnapped and taken the Red China.

I don't find it very scary that China can hit an aging weather satellite. I don't think it is entirely unwarranted for a country to want to defend it part of space. As far as we complaining about China weaponizing space, I heard it was an earth based weapon. Unlike the hunter killers we are planing or have already deployed in space, which are apart of our massive NMD program. I am in favor of the NMD, but never let anyone tell you it is directed at North Korea or Iran, that is only a side benefit. NMD is design in its practical and evolving forms to eliminate MAD, and make irrelevant China and Russia's arsenal of nuclear weapons. There are other space base weapons on the drawing board at the Pentagon, so the space weaponization horse is already out and has been running wild for years.
