ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - A Turkish court on Friday sentenced seven men caught in 2004 while allegedly planning to assassinate visiting U.S. President George W. Bush , CNN-Turk reported.

The seven were said to be members of the Ansar al-Islam radical Islamic group, which prosecutors said has ties to al-Qaida. They were caught in a raid before a June 2004 NATO Summit in Istanbul, which Bush attended.

The leader of the group, Alpaslan Toprak, was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison, while the other six defendants each received six years and three months, CNN-Turk reported. They were among 20 suspects being tried in the city of Bursa for "membership in an armed organization."

The other 13 men were acquitted on Friday, CNN-Turk said.

In raids of the men's houses, police said they found explosives, remote controls to set them off, guns and rifles. The men admitted in court to plotting to kill the U.S. president with a suicide bomb attack, CNN-Turk said.

It's a good thing they were caught in Turkey. If it had happened here, one of Clinton's judges would have freed them and the Black Caucus would have given them medals.

This is not merely some contention by the prosecutors. It's an established fact. They were based in Northern Iraq and received financial and material support from Saddam Hussein.
BUT

BUT
They had no WMD

--sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison, while the other six defendants each received six years and three months--

That's probably less than they'd have received for the crime of "insulting Turkishness" (by talking about the Ottomans' genocide of Armenians).

The movie itself is not really a true story. The real life Billy Hayes did get caught in Turkey smuggling drugs; he was sent to jail and then wrote a book on it. But the movie as written as by Oliver Stone is a quite different and a very exaggerated version of the book. The movie makes Turkey look a lot worse than reality, and makes the drug smuggling hero look a lot better (leaving out parts of the book where he had sex with men, etc)

Alas, no more death penalty in Turkey. They had to outlaw it a few years ago to meet European Union standards. EU considers it "barbaric."

-------
The unilateral mindless thinking of liberals. I wonder what they consider rape, murder, child molestation, and treason??? Friendly gestures, as opposed to barbarism??

Their head office was in the Baghdad area... Zarqawi's cell of foreigners set up there. Their "WMD" office was up north.

MARCH 2002 Friday : (ITALY : ARRESTS IN SECOND WMD PLOT ON A TARGET IN ROME / BUSH ASSASSINATION PLOT- See WMD, GIA) Italian investigators are looking into a second ring of suspected terrorists who may have been plotting a chemical weapons assault on Rome. An Algerian, a Pakistani, a Tunisian and three Iraqis were arrested in early morning raids Friday. ...The ring busted Friday is thought to be completely independent of the Moroccans [arrested last month Feb with a map of US embassy & large amounts of cyanide], officials said, although both likely have ties to Al Qaeda's network of terror. Investigators said they picked up chilling conversations from wiretaps and listening devices planted at a mosque. In one conversation, two of the suspects talked about how to get deadly chemicals.
"Ciprian, that's poison," one man said.
"He wants to get the cyanide. ... Who can do it?" another man asks.
The group also talked about acquiring weapons and its desire to kill President Bush.
One of the voices said: "I want to kill Bush. It must be done."
A police source commented, "There was no plan to kill him, but they expressed hatred for Bush."
The six men, the subject of an intense seven-month probe, are charged with "subversive association."
The suspects are believed to have ties to the radical Algerian insurgent movement the Armed Islamic Group.
