Beat John Kerry?
Are the Massachusetts Republicans crazy? Oh sure, it was a heady moment on Wednesday afternoon, when Liveshot pulled a Finneran on the Senate floor and started blubbering - and he hasnt even been convicted of a felony.
And then there were all the jokes on TV Wednesday night, like Dennis Miller on Fox saying that now Kerry can go back to his old job as a statue on Easter Island.
But then the local GOP got carried away.
The headline yesterday said the Republicans are ready to pounce. Pounce? That rhymes with bounce, as in out of office, which is what local Democrats have been doing to the GOPs candidates, incumbent or otherwise, for decades.
Ready to pounce? That rhymes with ounce, which is what anybody who thinks Kerry is beatable must have been smoking.
Its not like a Republican cant win a Senate race in Massachusetts. It happened as recently as 1972. The ready-to-pounce GOP says theyre looking for someone of stature to run against Americas Gigolo. Thats what they had the first time Kerry ran, when he was Mike Dukakis lieutenant governor.
In 1984, the Mass. GOP even had a primary between two well-known politicians - a millionaire businessman named Ray Shamie and a former state and U.S. attorney general, Elliot Richardson, who was even fired by Richard Nixon. Richardson was beaten by Shamie, who was beaten by well, you know.
That was 23 years ago. Now you have five - count em five - GOP state senators, out of 40. A meeting of the Republican caucus in the state Senate is even more sparsely attended than Kerrys final rallies in Iowa, and theyre less fun too, because no one ever brings a beer bong into the State House.
On the House side, the Republicans are down to 19 solons, an all-time low.
Instead of worrying about Kerry, why doesnt the state GOP try to win those four House seats where their candidate got either 48 or 49 percent of the vote last fall?
Then-Rep. Sue Pope was edged in a moonbat MetroWest district, 51-49. Rep. Vinnie deMachedos brother Ollie lost an equally tight race in Kingston with 49 percent. Two other Republican House candidates lost 52-48. In all, four seats were lost by a combined total of 2,085 votes.
Granted, even if the Republicans had captured all those seats, theyd still only have 23, in a 160-member body. But hey, you have to start somewhere, and I dont mean the U.S. Senate. Am I right, Ken Chase? You know what I mean, dont you, Jack E. Robinson?
The Mass. Republican party might do better if it changed its name. How does Taj Massachusetts sound? So whos warming up in the bullpen?
The former treasurer, Joe Malone? Hes the fill-in on Ch. 25 for my old radio producer, VB. Two words for Joe: Trixie Trischetta.
The former lieutenant governor, Muffy Healey? Sorry, shes booked at a tea-and-crumpets soiree at Camelot High.
Chris Egan? Hes not the ambassador, hes the ambassadors son. His old plan to buy a bust-out AM radio station was a brilliant investment strategy compared to self-financing a race against John Kerry.
Charlie Baker of Harvard Pilgrim? Last year he wouldnt give up his big-money job for a race for governor that at the time looked semi-winnable, so why would he throw it away for a chance to get drubbed by a guy whose second wife is willing to spend every cent in her first husbands trust fund?
Ready to pounce indeed. Most of the states Republicans already have - onto a moving truck headed out of state.
Taxachusetts is a sea of hard of thinking liberals. I trully feel for any Republican living there. Someone could offer me a million a year job in Boston and I would turn it down flat. I would rather cut my fingers off and feed them to the fish than live in that state.
The best thing that could happen to MA is global warming melting the polar ice cap and raising the sea level.
The best thing we can do is forget Kerry"s state and move on to others we can win back. Try Pennsylvania, Santorium lost on his own. He never visited the state and lived in a big house in Va. Pa is up for grabs, if the reps are smart and sometimes the national party isn't . Casey will do nothing except sit there and say what do I say Hillary. Pa will get nothing. This is only one state I am sure you can think of others.
The frightening thing is Kennedy, Kerry and similar company have life time jobs in Massachusetts. This is the norm for them and they think this is an ideal situation, so the clear goal is to make the Republicans an insignificant minority though out the nation. Over the next few years it is going to get more and more difficult to communicate conservative ideas.
Remember that Kerry beat Bill Weld, the most popular Republican (sorry, "Republican") in Massachusetts in 50 years. The Massh*les may hate Kerry, but they hate Republicans more. The GOP controls no statewide offices, 0 out of 12 congressional seats, and the Dems have a 90% majority in both houses of the General Court. In 2006, the Green-Rainbow Party fielded about double the number of candidates as the GOP. There is no Massachusetts Republican Party.
10 congressional seats, possibly 9 if the next census doesn't
take one away (illegal aliens, come on down and be counted!
We won't arrest you, just count you in the census)
Scary: Howie pointed out on his show yesterday that if
Kerry had picked Gephardt instead of Edwards as his running mate, he might have won states like MO and IA and we would have been seeing bumper stickers saying "Re Elect President
Kerry" by now.
Kerry and Kennedy have had such a free ride in MA that they thought (or at least Kerry did, in '04) that the nation
would follow suit.
10 House seats + 2 Senate seats = 12 Congressional seats. I too can count!
Massachusetts has so much to be proud of.
The election of 2004 was indeed a very close run thing. Not very encouraging for 2008.
oh right, I thought you meant House only! :) Usually I think
of "Congress(men" and "Senators" so... :)_
Count me among that number... although I'm still in the house-hunting stage, I'm already out of state work-wise. (I'm still stuck in the dreadfully hacked-up Mass National Guard, because the next closest units that use my speciality are in Maryland, Alabama, and Illinois. So I get to get whacked with MA taxes on that regardless. Thanks for nothing, U-Haul Patrick).

"...so why would he(Charlie Baker) throw it away for a chance to get drubbed by a guy whose second wife is willing to spend every cent in her first husbands trust fund?"
Maybe the reason Kerry was crying on the Senate floor was because Teresa had just told him that he couldn't run for President again. So his Senate job is all he has left; unless of course he is willing to divorce Teresa's money.
The bottom line is the Patrick era is a new era of corruption, criminality and economic stagnation. It's going to get far worse before it gets better, and there's no guarantee it's ever going to get better. Massachusetts has the slowest-growing economy in New England -- Patrick's "Let's reach for that" graft and greed will push it into a full single-state recession.
It's already happening. House sales are down 14% (number of sales closed) and 6% (median values). And that's just the leading edge of Deval's recession.
In five years, the state will be unlivable unless you are a welfare leech or someone who depends on government funds in some way for your job (defence contractor, university staff) -- but I repeat myself.

Why dont they get Mitt Romney to run, he could surely beat John Kerry..if there is ANYONE sane left in MA that is..
