The Russians are their own worst enemy. Their economy is in the toliet, the infrastructure is decaying, their political structure is rotting from corruption, yet they just can't resist the urge to pretend that they're still the Soviet Union.

The Russians are their own worst enemy. Their economy is in the toliet, the infrastructure is decaying, their political structure is rotting from corruption, yet they just can't resist the urge to pretend that they're still the Soviet Union.

Exactly. No one can fault them for acting in their own national interests. But this behavior is exactly opposite to their national interests. The last thing they need is to build up rogue states and fanatical Islamists on their own borders, and arm them with nuclear weapons. Yet that seems to be their aim.

Meantime, Russia itself is decaying from within. If they don't fix that, they will doom themselves to extinction.

This is worse than the kind of corruption that plagued Russia under the Tsars. Back then at least they had energy and courage, and were building an empire and fending off the Muslim threat. Now, they are in a state of demographic implosion, and are welcoming in their own destroyers.
