Hillary Clinton: Trouble in River City [excellent editorial]
Chron Watch ^ | Jan 25, 2007 | Paul R. Hollrah

According to a recent story in NewsMax.com, Washington insiders with close contacts inside Hillary Clinton’s coterie are saying that the senator is not at all happy about Nancy Pelosi’s selection as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

NewsMax tells us, “At first blush, feminist Pelosi and her ‘San Francisco values’ would seem to be a good fit with Clinton… but politics is getting in the way.  Hillary fears that the California congresswoman will rival her as the leading woman in her party, a position that (Clinton) held, unchallenged, before Democrats took control of Congress in the midterm elections.”

That, of course, is true.  The instant she took the Speaker’s gavel, Pelosi became the highest ranking woman in government, leapfrogging Condoleezza Rice to become second in line to the presidency (Rice, as Secretary of State, currently stands fourth in line behind Vice President Dick Cheney, Pelosi, and Senate President Pro Tem Robert Byrd (D-WV), a former Grand Kleagle of the KKK).  But more importantly, as Speaker, Pelosi will be in charge of the entire Democratic agenda in the House, while Clinton will be just one of 100 members of the Senate.

But it’s not just her place in the “pecking order” that bothers Clinton.  It’s the fact that, if Pelosi fails as Speaker, her failure will damage all women on the liberal side of the political spectrum.  Not all women; just liberal women.

Fair or not, liberal women have a well-deserved reputation for being shrewish and “hard edged.”  We would be hard-pressed to name a single prominent woman on the liberal side of the political divide who is not a shouter, a screamer, and a hater.  Consider Clinton, Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, Maxine Waters, Sheila Jackson Lee, Cynthia McKinney, Whoopi Goldberg, Barbra Streisand, and Rosie O’Donnell, to name just a few.  If they weren’t all busy promoting left wing causes we’d likely find them hanging out in waterfront saloons, fighting over drunken sailors… male and female.

Compare the Democrat women to prominent Republican women: Condoleezza Rice, Elizabeth Dole, Kay Bailey Hutchison, the late Jeanne Kirkpatrick, Phyllis Schlafly, Christie Whitman, Peggy Noonan, Bo Derek, and many others.  They are all fine, genteel ladies of flawless reputation who always conduct themselves as such.

The one senior woman on the Democrat side of the aisle that Republicans could embrace is Jane Harman (D-CA).  However, it appears that Harman has two strikes against her:  First, Pelosi doesn’t like her.  This, of course, tends to resuscitate the old male chauvinist charge that women in leadership positions have a tendency to put personal feelings ahead of what may be best for the cause.  Pelosi’s willingness to bypass a competent woman she doesn’t like, in favor of a male member of the Black Caucus who is also an impeached former federal judge, may have set back the cause of women’s rights by a decade or two.

Secondly, during her tenure on the House Intelligence Committee, Harman has always been a straight shooter and, unlike her senate counterpart, Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), has studiously avoided using her position on the Committee to further the cause of the Democratic Party.

In other words, as Democrats tried to advance the party’s fortunes by charging the Bush Administration with misusing intelligence information, Harman played it straight from the shoulder.  She did not find that charge to have any basis in fact and refused, until party leaders forced her to do otherwise, to participate in that fiction.

But now there is yet another problem on the horizon for Hillary Clinton.  While Democrats have been very good at hoodwinking blacks with high-sounding words and unfulfilled promises, the kind of black candidates they’ve attracted are not the kind of blacks that the white majority would be willing to support.  For the most part they are race-hustling demagogues (Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Charlie Rangel, John Conyers, etc.), while Republicans have attracted black candidates of real substance: J.C. Watts, Herman Cain, Michael Steele, Ken Blackwell, and Lynn Swann, men of substance who had the wholehearted support of white Republicans.

Now Democrats have found what they believe to be a new secret weapon: a young black man from the South Side of Chicago with a Muslim-sounding name, Barak Hussein Obama, who is among the least experienced members of the United States Senate.  Not only is Obama “all brass and a yard wide” (he can say he wants to be president with a straight face), he is quite adept at speaking in high-sounding platitudes...  a device that Democrats have turned into an art form.

But now, Hillary Clinton, herself an expert in the use of the spoken platitude, is faced with the problem of defeating a black man with the same finely honed talent.  There’s trouble in River City.  It’ll be fun to watch.

Bo Derek is a "genteel lady of flawless reputation"?

Please.

I have absolutely no doubt that this is true. And I find it very difficult--no, impossible--to root for either one of them.

Well, I've thought about it for about 5 minutes, trying to refute your point. She really was a 10, whatever. But I can't, in honesty, refute it. However, as much as I revere Margaret Thatcher, I suspect that Bo IS better in a bikini (or less).

Since you were the first poster to mention her, it is your obligation to provide a photo. :)

Maybe I have been living in Madison, WI for too long but I have a deep seated feeling that the demographic of people's voting and life style values have gotten pretty cheesy. I think that in the next election apart from a miracle of God many many people are going to come out and vote for Hillery that have "values" that look like nothing we have seen before. They will be coming out of the closet in full force and they are mindless, gutless, manner-less and socialist. Our public school system has been working hard for the last 20 years and it is bound to have an effect. I mean look at who was almost voted in last election.

The photos I would provide to prove that point (sans bikini) would be pulled in a heartbeat... OK, two heartbeats.

Pelosi should run for President. She fits in with their party's mainstream.

I don't believe this to be true. The Vice-President is of course the first in line. After that there is debate as to what the lineage is. Most articles that I have read on this agree that it would end up in the SCOTUS to determine futher succession.

The movie "Bolero" comes to mind. And if you haven't seen the movie, it includes one of the hotest scenes I have ever scene outside of the smut industry. Bo Derek was the fantasy of my childhood.

The fact that she is now somewhat of a model citizen and trying to speak out for good causes only cements her place in the pantheon of all-time hot women.

I believe you're correct, because the succession is supposed to be of "elected" officials, in preference to those who are "appointed", such as cabinet members.

However, because the current terrorists have vowed to take out the capitol building, in a catastrophy .. it would probably be decided by a smaller group of congressional people as to who the president should be. I don't know if there are any contingent plans like that .. but I would hope so .. otherwise the democrats will run roughshod over everything and try to take total power. Sad to say .. but true none the less.

You are absolutely right. I do not believe there is any contingency plans and that would play right into the demorats hands. What a sorry place this would be. It wouldn't be "cut and run", it would be "bandages all around". Oh, and pay for them on your way out.

Face it, Hilly, you would be threatened by the likes of Marge Simpson and Edith Bunker.

Hill can't handle strong competition!!

I am in full agreement with you. As I sit here in New York marveling at the lemmings who will follow anyone with a "D" after their name.

One of my kids came home from high school and said that her history teacher basically gives opinions instead of facts. No one in the class recognizes this but her. They scribble away in their notebooks and the brainwashing continues!

I enjoy music, but most of the good concerts in my area are sponsored by a left of Stalin on the radio dial station. The type of people that attend these concerts are some of the most worthless people I've ever met. They're not the people I grew up with. It's like they only allowed the wimps and slackers from my generation to procreate.

Don't despair! Some of us are raising solid conservatives. I have two in the bag and one who is trying to be liberal but is wavering in the face of logic. I expect him to succumb to objective truth any minute now. I just hope there's enough of us to make a difference.

Harold Hill: A man can't turn tail and run just because a little personal risk is involved. What did Shakespeare say? "Cowards die a thousand deaths, the brave man... only 500"?
