Reagan Democrat (Sen. Jim Webb)
The Washington Post ^ | Thursday, January 25, 2007 | E. J. Dionne Jr.

Posted on 01/24/2007 9:58:01 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

Like him or not, Ronald ("Tear Down This Wall") Reagan spoke in a clean, clear prose that almost always left listeners with a sense that he stood for something.

It may thus be no accident that Jim Webb, Virginia's new Democratic senator, was once a Reaganite.

In his reply to President Bush's State of the Union speech on Tuesday night, Webb defined the two central moral issues that animate most of the Democratic Party's rank and file: the mess in Iraq and the fact that the fruits of a growing economy are not being shared by all Americans.

Then Webb did something rather astonishing: He didn't fudge on his language or try to take the hard edge off his impatience with the status quo.

Giving the speech in response to a president's State of the Union address may be the hardest assignment in politics. Even the best of the genre reek of focus-grouped and poll-tested sentences. You have the feeling the words are dictated by some party pooh-bah who believes the speech will fail if it does not touch all the issues on every strategist's list.

Gee, say the consultants to the poor politician who has to carry the party's torch, you just have to mention health care and child care and the environment and union rights and stem cell research -- and every other issue that energizes some base voter in some corner of the party.

And, oh yes, Mr. Politician, don't forget that your real targets are those critical moderate independent swing voters in the Midwestern and Rocky Mountain states, and here's a list of key phrases we've polled to death that they respond to. You have to throw them in somewhere.

Ever wonder why politicians are so often accused of offering mush?

It's amusing how when Dems want to sound really serious, they connect themselves with Republicans.

Why don't you provide us with information proving he is a dynamic speaker other than you saying so?

Go to google. I'm busy writing.

http://sweetness-light.com/archive/webb-campaign-still-running-bogus-reagan-endorsement

"Mrs. Reagan directed the Webb campaign to refrain from using President Reagan’s name, image and likeness to imply that the late President is endorsing Webb,” according to the Allen letter.

"And what did Webb do? He ignored Mrs. Reagan’s request.

"The fact is, Webb’s campaign managers described President Reagan as a ‘pompous, arrogant fool’ and said that the Reagan administration was ‘a sell-out and a sham.’”

Allen’s letter points out that Webb abruptly quit as Secretary of the Navy in 1988 after serving only 10 months, and at the time of his departure he made the "incredible claim” that the Reagan administration was not sufficiently committed to a strong defense.

Webb is known to have called Reagan a "bumbling fool or idiot", however, I can not find that link.

E.J.Dionne is nothing but another in a long line of sycophants. The Dems have the MSM in their collective hip pocket. I wish our voice was as loud.

Listed below is yet another reason I despise the rude POS. I don't care who a person thinks they are.....the disrespect Webb has shown toward the President is totally insipid, inept, childish and disgusting. Webb is a POS with a big mouth.

This pig is owed nada in the way of respect, sir. While your beloved military man was out in CA in the late '60s, he rode around Watts pointing guns at those Black folks he so obviously hates (just for kicks), and shall we not also forget his Jew-baiting primary AND general election ?

How 'bout his obsession with graphically describing pedophilia and homosexual incest and other perversities in his novels ? Oh, and did I forget to mention he has a few screws loose with his violent and paranoiac rages ? Those, of course, are just the things we KNOW about.

Oh, and, yeah, he stabbed President Reagan in the back and lied his treacherous little ass off to make it look like he would've been supported by him during his little run (!), left that one out, too.

For a guy quick to defend Jim Webb, you sure go underground and disappear quickly as soon as facts start showing up showing he is a pathetic person that was disrespectful to Reagan and his elderly widow. Nice guy Jim Webb is. Are you proud of him writing of a father copulating his own son? If not, quit defending him.

Maybe. In between his schoolmaster tsk tsking's of us FReepers telling the truth on this scum, I have to wonder where this fella was when his favorite rodent ran one of the ugliest Senate candidacies in recent memory (perhaps tied with the openly gay-baiting '02 MT Senate race that Max Baucus masterminded to get him another win). If Allen had been a Democrat incumbent with Webb as a Republican, the media would've laid to waste the latter's campaign with all of his red flags. Webb is the lowest of the low, and in the rodent Senate caucus, that's REALLY telling you something.

I hope you've insured your gigantic strawmen against wind damage.

It's juvenile to snipe at him as a "faker..."

He IS a faker: he has NOTHING in common politically with Ronald Reagan. Zero, zip, nada.

Period. Dot. Bingo.

You did see the E.J. Dionne alert, didn't you? That should have been sufficient.

But .. he has no scruples .. and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that's why he only lasted with Reagan for 9 mos.

Thank you, that needs to be said more often around here.

How did a guy even get elected after admittedly writing that trash? This should have been plastered all over the news. It's disgusting!
