Like him or not, Ronald ("Tear Down This Wall") Reagan spoke in a clean, clear prose that almost always left listeners with a sense that he stood for something.
It may thus be no accident that Jim Webb, Virginia's new Democratic senator, was once a Reaganite.
In his reply to President Bush's State of the Union speech on Tuesday night, Webb defined the two central moral issues that animate most of the Democratic Party's rank and file: the mess in Iraq and the fact that the fruits of a growing economy are not being shared by all Americans.
Then Webb did something rather astonishing: He didn't fudge on his language or try to take the hard edge off his impatience with the status quo.
Giving the speech in response to a president's State of the Union address may be the hardest assignment in politics. Even the best of the genre reek of focus-grouped and poll-tested sentences. You have the feeling the words are dictated by some party pooh-bah who believes the speech will fail if it does not touch all the issues on every strategist's list.
Gee, say the consultants to the poor politician who has to carry the party's torch, you just have to mention health care and child care and the environment and union rights and stem cell research -- and every other issue that energizes some base voter in some corner of the party.
And, oh yes, Mr. Politician, don't forget that your real targets are those critical moderate independent swing voters in the Midwestern and Rocky Mountain states, and here's a list of key phrases we've polled to death that they respond to. You have to throw them in somewhere.
Ever wonder why politicians are so often accused of offering mush?

Sen. Jim Webb giving the response to the State of the Union address.
I am sick and tired of people calling Webb a Reagan democrat. He worked for Reagan for only nine months I believe it was, and he BAD MOUTHED Reagan when he left his administration. He is trying to ride coattails he burned a long time ago. Why are more people not highlighting this.
The Dems are not who they pretend to be. Make no mistake.
Boy this is ever a barf alert
OMG are you serious he work for President Reagan well don't feel bad he only work for him unlike Ron Prescott Reagan he is not related THANK GOD ROFL
I'm sure tired of democrats trying to fool people into thinking they are conservatives...they're just being dishonest. We have Webb as a Reagan democrat and Hillary as a Margaret Thatcher...both are lies...guess that's the best we can expect from a democrat.
I thought he was a registered Republican for many years wasn't he?..... I have to admit, he is a force to be reckoned with.... He pulls no punches and is pretty articulate.....
Man. This is the third article I have scanned (not actually readable are they?)today in which the "reporter" is in full "thanks to the wisdom and insight of glorious leader" mode.
I bet if you search their desks you will find North Korean phrase books.
Somebody should be making a list of these traitors so they can be brought to justice in the event their treasonous actions should actually bring mass casualties to our shores.
He also likes to write unspeakable acts of a father copulating his own son. He is a force that will self destruct in not the too long future.
FTA: "But Webb's performance was a salutary sign that Democrats just might be getting over the battered party syndrome that has left so many of them terrified of saying exactly what's on their minds."
I can't believe Dionne wrote this as the Dem B-stards never did STFU.
Shave the sides of his rug, give him a cute little moustache, and he reminds me of somebunny...
Is that true? Can you give me the quote, and a citation to it? I've never heard that he badmouthed Reagan. What exactly did he say? Please provide a source.
Webb was a decorated Vietnam Marine. He wasn't fooling when he did that. His son is a Marine in Iraq. That's not fooling either. Why can't we disagree with people without questioning their honor, especially somebody - like Webb - who deserves respect for serving his country. It's juvenile to snipe at him as a "faker" just because we disagree with his politics. Jefferson and Washington disagreed on a lot of political issues, but they were both patriots.
Webb is a class A Commie and a jerk. You can have him. Nancy Reagan told him to pull his ads when that sorry POS was running ads proclaiming him as this wonderful person who worked in the Reagan Administration.
The truth is, President Reagan fired him because he is not to be trusted.
For my wife and I, it's because the tax rates are still too high.
Why can't we rise above this kind of kiddie stuff? Webb is wrong in his politics, but criticizing his looks doesn't defeat his arguments - it just makes the critic look juvenile.
Can you provide some evidence for that? I never heard that he was fired. Please show me where I can read about this.
