I hung out a seed cake this afternoon ..hoping for a return..It did not work this summer when I was trying to lure him in closer.
The small "drive me crazy bird" returned..It drives me crazy because I cannot identify it..It has very pale olive tinge and is so"busy" when he is feeding I cannot see the markings..I first thought gold finch this year but no black markings that I can see except perhaps on the tail..Years ago I spent many hours trying to find it's name.I'm keeping the binoculars close in case he returns.
A pretty house male house finch returned also..I had seen the females feeding.
Four squirrels showed up today so nothing left for white throated sparrow and cardinal at dusk..They are going to have to use the tube feeder!

Adorable Graphics, Pics, and Poetry, Dear Finest FRiends! Meg, I have One of those Woodpeckers Wearing the Bright Red Cap Here at my Shepherd-King's Ranch, and the Brilliance of that Cap is not to be Believed; you can See that Bird a Long Ways Off because the Color is So Vivid! There is Also at Least One of the Smaller Woodpeckers with the Red Dot at the Back of his Head, and he's an Energetic and Busy Little Thing. So many Beautiful Birds are Around Here, and I'm Thankful to our Lord for All His Wonderful Blessings!

ONE MINUTE EACH NIGHT AT 9 P.M.
ONE MINUTE EACH NIGHT. In WWII, there was an advisor to Churchill who organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every night at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, its people and peace.
There is now a group of people organizing the same thing here in America. If you would like to participate: Each evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Time (8:00 PM Central) (6:00 PM Pacific), stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the United States, our troops, our citizens, and for a Godly nation. If you know anyone who would like to participate, please pass this along. Someone said if Christians really understood the full extent of the power we have available through prayer, we might be speechless. Our prayers are the most powerful asset we have. Together, we "CAN" make a difference!
Thank You, and God Bless America!

From plane of light to plane, wings dipping through Geometries and orchids that the sunset builds, Out of the peak's black angularity of shadow, riding The last tumultuous avalanche of Light above pines and the guttural gorge, The hawk comes. His wing Scythes down another day, his motion Is that of the honed steel-edge, we hear The crashless fall of stalks of Time.
The head of each stalk is heavy with the gold of our error.
Look!Look!he is climbing the last light Who knows neither Time nor error, and under Whose eye, unforgiving, the world, unforgiven, swings Into shadow.
Long now, The last thrush is still, the last bat Now cruises in his sharp hieroglyphics. His wisdom Is ancient, too, and immense. The star Is steady, like Plato, over the mountain.
If there were no wind we might, we think, hear The earth grind on its axis, or history Drip in darkness like a leaking pipe in the cellar.

I think the red cap gets brighter in winter because I did not recall it being so red!
Your smaller woodpecker is probably a downy..I have one listed in my journal but have not seen one this year..
I had a raccoon on my patio last night after the bird seed..It's my first sighting in months!
I feel so blessed to get to see God's creatures.((Hugs))

Hmm, a mystery bird. I love the challenge of Id. Although, I'm not very good at it. ;) I'll see if I can find anything that could match your description.

I just put out a little cage feeder this morning and mystery bird is back,mall..pale yellow , olive streaked breast..pale yellow under tail I believe..greyish olive back..no goldfinch like markings....very faint eyestripe, I believe, No wing stripes..a cutie..The sun is out and I could really see the olive tinge.
I have searched warblers,vireos..The orange crowned warbler is as close as I can come to it's appearance.(orange not noticable it says.).

That's so nice you have a new bird in the yard. I have tried to Id warblers, in the past, it's not easy. The marking above the eye is a good clue. I have a friend, who has been birding since he was a boy. He's extremely knowledgeable. I'm going to run this by him and see what he comes up with. :)

More power to the striped tabbies of the world. I have one and this is the kind of thing she would have done as a kitten.

I wish I could say it's been a great week. I just missed two days of work because this "cold" turned out to be the flu. I haven't been online for at least three days; haven't even been out my door in two...
Eventually, of course, I'll be back in FReeping form but I'm mostly lurking right now... or, at least, trying.;^)
How's things your way?
