They serve as a psychological rubber hose! When they do work, its on the average joe who made a mistake while being a mostly pro-social person. Psychopaths beat them every time. So it can be said, government use of polygraphs (and voice stress analyzers) selects the psychopaths as truthful over the conscience possessing average joe!
