Brownback, Hunter Vow to Overturn Roe

WASHINGTON - Two of the Republicans' most conservative presidential hopefuls promised anti-abortion activists on Monday that if elected, they would work to overturn the Supreme Court decision legalizing the procedure.

Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback (news, bio, voting record) and California Rep. Duncan Hunter (news, bio, voting record) addressed the annual March for Life marking the anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.

"We recognize a tragedy of life in Roe v. Wade, but that tragedy will not always stand," Brownback told thousands of cheering abortion foes at an afternoon rally.

Brownback, who formally launched his presidential bid on Saturday, spoke about adopting his daughter, Jenna, from a Chinese orphanage.

"I mention her because some woman in China, who I probably will never meet, fought for her life," Brownback said. "Somebody fought for her life. You are fighting for somebody's life.

Hunter, who has established a presidential exploratory committee, told the crowd he and his wife would begin to campaign in earnest this Thursday in South Carolina, one of the earliest primary states.

"If we have a judicial applicant, a judicial nominee who can look at a sonogram of an unborn child and not see the value of human life ... if I should become president of the United States, he will not receive a judicial appointment," Hunter said.

Both lawmakers are viewed as long shots to win the nomination over better-known candidates like Arizona Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. But each is aiming to corner the party's social conservative base, which considers abortion a key issue.

Brownback later hosted a reception on Capitol Hill for about 200 of the activists.

Yet another of many reasons to support them over a liberal rino like Rudy McRomney.

I like their guts, but they are now officially worse than Bush in the media's eyes.

Brownback, Hunter Vow to Overturn Roe

Interesting... do they think they are campaigning for the Supreme Court?? Cause unless they get appointed, I see no way for these guys to do what they promise.

Its never gonna happen. It didn't happen when the GOP ran Congress; and the Democrats represent the culture of death. Oh Roe is good fodder for politicians to rail against but no one really wants to undo it.

Judicial activism is wrong!!!

Unless the judge rules in favor of my agenda.

How nice. I'm still going to vote for Tancredo in '08. If we don't secure our boarders and start to be candid with the American people the way only Tancredo has been we can stop worrying about the unborn. We won't even have a nation.

The reality is the Roe probably will never be overturned, regardless of how many conservative judges are appointed simply because of stare decisis. William Rehnquist said as much himself.

And if it is eventually overturned, it only returns the question to each state to decide for itself. Abortion will always be legal in the blue states, meaning you're only one Fun Fare away from getting a legal abortion in the USA.

Overpromising to the conservative base is proven campaign tactic, but only because the base can be a sucker.

It's a nice thought but its stupid to run on that platform - it will turn off many voters who don't think that is a big issue and it sounds almost threatening.

IN a matter of life and death like Roe I demand that a candidate support overturning it if they want my vote. That is none negotiable.

I don't mind Hunter or Brownback either - I'm willing to give everyone a shot at it. I'm not going to bash anyone (except - cough! Cough! GAG! McCain!) - they all have their own ideas and I'm willing to listen.

An absolute ban on abortion couldn't even pass in South Dakota. Brownback and Hunter must think conservatives are stupid when they make a promise that can never be fulfilled.

I know. So many others are pretty nasty in their staunch Rudyism, though.

I want to hear them all. And I intend to. I did in 2000 (of course 2004 was only Bush for me) and I'll do it again in 2008.
