I live in Pennsylvania about a half hour away from NJ. Everyone is shocked by the number of New Yorkers moving to PA and commuting. NYers are buying brand new large homes here for 350,000 - 400,000 and thinking it's cheap. It has affected the price of homes around here, and many young couples can't afford one anymore.
Oh forget it, everyone I grew up with or knew in the past is now all gone, moved out. I am the lone dissenter. Even my parents moved.
The real estate prices not to mention the property taxes are so out of control here, I estimate in about as little as ten years the economy of the entire city is going to collapse, the city is going to go bankrupt, and it will affect the surrounding states even more. Why? Because nobody is going to live here anymore except the very filthy rich.
What psychopath is going to want to be a cop or a fireman in a city where apartment rentals will cost you $4000- $5000 a month? Forget about buying a house or a condo, right now the minimum for those is about a million bucks. Sure you can live out of state and make the long commute everyday, but the money they pay cops and fireman, it`s just not worth it.
Real estate prices are going to affect every aspect of what the city runs on, it doesn`t matter how rich someone is.. without the working class the city will collapse. Every 10 years the real estate prices double here.
For example in 1986 I was paying $400 a month rent. 1995 I moved and found a place for $700...Now I was thinking of moving last year...Guess what the average rent is now for just ONE bedroom in Queens.. $1300-$1400!!! This is not even Manhattan! This is the outer boroughs! Manhattan its DOUBLE!
So what is going to happen 10 years from now? Is the rent going to be $3000 a month? $4000?? What guy making $50-60k a year is going to want to live here? And they will be making $50K a year. The starting salary for a cop right now is $25k a year and when it comes to cops, firemen, the city is notoriously cheap. So what does this mean? Crime will run amok, illegals will be running everything, and the city will collapse. Good I say, because I hate this city. It`s nothing but one big cancer sore of liberalism.
You have my sympathy. Long Island went that way, and the commuting part, particularly, made it so nasty.
