Yet, there are many on FR (Rudy supporters) who believe winning is all that's important ... even if you have to sell your soul.

The paragraph concerning the author's opinion about what is not a conservative anfd what should not be in the GOP is exactly the kind of statement that the left uses to brand Republicans as extremist. If a man wont risk his own life to secure our national borders, he is NOT a conservative.
The fact that someone doesn't want to risk their life to defend a border means they should not be part of the GOP? Sounds good in theory. Sounds extremist to the general electorate IMO. I'd rather have %70-90 of what I want than %20-30. I'll take the 'bigger tent' and the lesser of two evils.

this place in history Most all history is political. The doers are not interested in politics, and see history as useless. Blair's doers are doing all right, but not in a way that history would notice.

A big tent is OK alsong as you don't fill the extra space with clowns like Snow, Collins, Hagel, Specter and such.

rudy, romney and mccain - three rinos that have different pockets of support merely because "they can win". Forget that when republicans run and govern as conservatives, they win, and when they run as moderates / liberals, they lose. Just repeat that "they can win" mantra over and over again. Maybe it will console the rudy supporters as a democrat is sworn in on january 20, 2009.
Let's see...trying to outliberal the liberals over the past several years led the republicans to lose control of congress. Now their answer is we didn't go liberal enough, so we need one of three rinos to win the presidency in 2008.
Great thinking!
Of course, should the rino lose, the blame will be placed on those 'evil conservatives' who refused to ignore the things they believed in to vote for a rino "because they can win". They will be blamed for the loss, instead of blaming the continued GOP sellout for the loss.

Salena Zito wrote an interesting column in the Pittsburgh paper on Glenn Beck, who is rapidly becoming a favorite of many FReepers.
In it she quotes him as saying:
"I think the Republicans and the Democrats are both taking us to the same destination -- hell in a handbasket," Beck explained. "One of them is flying on the Concorde, and the other one's taking a very slow steam train, but the destination is the same place."
Heres the link for Glenn Beck fans:

Exactly. As long as the GOP continues to appease its enemies, the liberals and their media, they will lose.
Can't understand why they don't see it.

"Can't understand why they don't see it."
Nor can a lot of us! I pray they will, but other than writing letters, praying is all I know to do. IMO we will know if and when they start seeing it, when they start holding the enemies to the same standards which Republicans are held to. We have had a number of Republicans resign or thrown out of office in one way or another, and most of them, rightly so. But the sins of the enemy FAR outweigh the sins of those with "R" next to their names, and I for one, would like to see them held accountable as well. Which is so far overdue that most voters now do not remember any of the sins happening.
I cannot for the life of me, understand how or why, these scum are not held accountable.
And as this article states, this country is done, unless we can get real conservatives back in power.

Boot the RINOs in the Senate now because being in the minority by 1 is no different than being in the minority by 5 with the RINOs there. Specter, Snowe and Collins have never been a real Republicans and have voted more times left than even the center. Hagel is a has-been that once held values of the Party but has sold his soul to the Rats on Iraq.
